The atmosphere at Bates is incredible. Almost everyone is friendly, approachable and yet unique at the same time. You will meet interesting people that are there to learn but to have fun as well. Definitely more laid back and less competitive between students than Bowdoin.

I fondly recall Bates as being some of the best years of my life so far. The quality of life, not to mention the quality of education, is fantastic and my undergraduate choice offered a solid foundation for my chosen career of veterinary medicine. At the time I was a student, there was definitely a "work hard, play hard" philosophy, which worked well for me-this may not be the case for everyone. Having said that, I would strongly recommend this school!

While Bates College is a great school, there's one thing that all applicants should know -- this college is very small and the surrounding city is not great at all. I'm from NYC and to come to Lewiston, ME was horrible for the first semester. No car and no where to go = bored out of my mind. But after making a few friends who were impulsive and had cars, it was much better. We would go out on midnight runs and everything, but most people on campus prefer to stay on campus. I don't -- it's pretty but there's not much to do...
Also, if you're shy, it'll be hard to assimilate at first, but you'll find your niche and fit in. Once that happens, it's a wonderful experience. Just make sure to keep opportunities open and to have fun. I met my friends at parties and just through other people; I can't imagine college without them anymore. Regarding academics, I came from a rigorous high school curriculum, so the work is not very hard for me; I even have time to be alone and have fun an hour or so a day. Again, it all depends on your major.
