I was a bit hesitant to attend VCUQuite BrightBiology
I was a bit hesitant to attend VCU because I'm from the country and It's right in the middle of downtown Richmond VA, but I think I am happy with my choice. This school is a unique one and it thrives on the diversity of it's students. Let me just say that I absolutely love the diversity here. Being from a South American background I was happy to see that there are other people from the same places and really from everywhere. It helps prepare you for a global experience and you make friends from everywhere. Regarding my major, I absolutely love it. However, it should be noted that these classes are not easy. The biology teachers here are mostly good; however, they expect a lot of you. The chemistry department isn't quite as great. I have had trouble with my chemistry classes since they are a co-requisite for Biology majors. The only complaint I really have about this school is some of the gen eds you have to take serve no purpose and you don't learn much from them. Also, the 45 credit 300 and above level requirement is AWFUL if you are a transfer student like myself. In regard to the city of Richmond.. It's an old city. There are really great areas to the west down broad street and I have had no trouble. I've never felt in danger or had anything happen on campus or in Richmond and this was probably my biggest fear. If you are interested in VCU then we would be happy to have you here. I'm loving every moment so far.

VCU is the most open-minded, diverse, and welcoming university in the region.
Yes, there are some problems - like lack of school-spirit among the students and a huge complex of inferiority (especially by students born and raised in Virginia) - but VCU is the fastest-growing university in the state.

Since Dr. Rao began his tenure as president of VCU, the school has undergone to major changes. Adding 3 new buildings in less than a year, and with more than $1 billion (!!!) dollars to be spent in new infrastructure in the next 7 years.

VCU is a reference in many areas such as the school of Arts (#1 among the public schools in the country), the departments of Chemistry (already produced a Nobel), History (especially the focus on Civil War history), and the School of Mass Comm (with the best graduate school in the region). And also VCU has the best school-hospital of the state, and some of the best health programs in the nation (like the award-winning Nursing school). If you're a sports fan, like myself, you might be a bit disappointed during the warmer months, but from November to March VCU becomes a Basketball-Crazy environment. The Rams are ranked among the best in the nation, and are the best team in the state, and led by extremely popular Coach Shaka Smart, they are the main flag-bearers of the school.

Everyone in VCU arts is super friendly. I'm so sad my freshman year is ending already. I don't even want to go home! I highly recommend this university! If you are smart or average be sure to come here. My upperclassmen helped me and I will surely help any new students this fall. Come visit the campus if you are really interested
