Middlebury College - Comments and Student Experiences | |||||||||||||||||||

Since I transferred to Middlebury from Colgate, I can directly compare at least the two colleges. Middlebury students have a much higher sense of ethics due to the honor code, the academics are better and more engaging and there is much more to do socially as Middlebury brings in good culture options and the night life was more fun. Maybe not as hard core or fraternity centered, but more fun. I would agree with other comments that the administration is trying to control the social life through the commons system and I do not like the commons system. However, that shouldn't be enough to keep someone from attending this great college.
As for the people there - definitely a ton of the arrogant NYC/New England crowd running around. My suggestion to any current or future student is to choose your close friends wisely but don't make enemies. Scent of a Woman is a good movie to check out here... I met some great lifelong friends there but I also met many deplorable people. The catch is I might have to work with one of them in the future OR work FOR one of their parents. Get the drift? One great thing to remember is that most of the arrogant "rich" kids also happen to be emotionally weak folks due to their pampered/sheltered upbringing. Most can be squashed rather easily should it ever get that far.Bottom Line - College is to prepare you for the real world. I came out better prepared than most.
Middlebury is an elite school, but not like the ivies, in that we don't have the stuck up superficial type, who only care about bragging about their intellect and the big school name value.
We act like real people, we're not the super nice type that makes you want to puke from flakiness. We're the type you want to be friends with forever. The downside to this is that you graduate after four years and have to deal with people who aren't as fun.
Middlebury has stellar academics, but the best part of Midd is really the people and the whole experience. It's four years of your life, don't make it just about the piece of paper you get at the end that says "BA degree". Middlebury is all you ever wanted and more. (Except when it comes to life outside of the campus. Burlington is an hour away, and it's a pretty small city)
