Positive Negative Neutral Advice

Ok, I'm going to do my best to offer any advice that will help you make your mind up about attending UMW. By the way, I transferred here from a community college, so this review will primarily benefit transfers.

This school IS hard to get into. I read a lot of comments from people that seem to tag the school with an "easy" admissions label -- don't believe it. The school has roughly 5,000 people, and you do need to be a very good student to be admitted. However, that does have it's problems;

For the most part, the student body is chock full of money. There are a lot of wealthy people here, and it shows in the overall stuck up attitude of the student body.

The "party scene" was never really that important to me, so I won't comment about it. With that said, there is an underground Frat here on campus, and they throw parties frequently around Fredericksburg.

The town: what do you expect? Fredericksburg has everything you could ever want in a town -- a beautiful "old town" area, and Central Park which contains just about every store ever invented. A major plus to the shopping center is that it is secluded from the campus, so the traffic is for the most part, isolated.

The campus is beautiful, however, do NOT let this mislead you. When I was on the college hunt, the beauty of this campus alone reeled me in. Do not make the same mistake I did! Make your decision based on the academics and involvement, not a few nice looking brick buildings.

Dorm life: Can't say that I like it. Internet has frequent problems and since the buildings are a hundred years old, there is a lot of wear and tear. Also, the parking is absolutely terrible. As a transfer student, I heard about 6 different answers to the question of "can I bring a car?". Freshmen cannot have cars, or overnight guests for the first semester.

The bureocracy here is unbelievably horrible; not to say that it isn't at every school, but the fact that 6 different people have 6 different answers to a general question like the car situation just shows how disorganized the administration is. Cops will ticket your car if it is left unnattended for an hour.

Last but not least, applying to transfers: For lack of a better word, I got fucked on my transferrable classes. I brought 26 credits in, and only 6 credits count towards my gen-ed requirements. Keep in mind that the classes that I took WERE all standard gen-ed classes. The University is extremely strict on transferring credits; they claim "academic reputation", but I can't help but think that there are financial motives involved.

I do not know the reputation of UMW. Apparently, it has a good one among the mid-Atlantic region. It better though, because the Gen-Ed requirements of this school are more intimidating then any other school. This is a liberal arts university, and don't expect to cut corners; 2 years of foreign language is required!I hope this helped.

Question
My experience at UMW has not been theQuite BrightBiology
My experience at UMW has not been the best. While I aknowledge that the school is a fairly decent institution, and is a good match for a few particular sets of people, I can't say I was amongst them (as a note, I never really intended to go to UMW, but I got waitlisted at my first choice (UVa), and rejected elsewhere, so that probably influences my views well).

Anyway, my major grievances with the university follow:

-Lack of an Honors program above what is offered in individual departments. UMW is the only public college in Virginia that does not have one. One that would allow exceptional students greater freedom when dealing with the very restrictive General Education requirements here, a la the Echols program at UVa.

-Poor quality of Undergraduate research. While I'll be the first to admit that UMW's reputation is not built on being a research school, and that is perfectly understandable given it's commitment to the ideal Liberal Arts education, this does not excuse the fact that it's extremely difficult to get access to undergraduate research, especially independent research projects, which are almost non-existent.

-The bureaucracy is a nightmare.
-While the school prides itself on getting a hands-on, open approach to teaching, I've found many of the courses, those in the sciences particuarly, are taught in the normal collegiate style- huge lectures with little or no student-professor interaction. While my Chem lecture class is only 20 people, for example, it might as well be 100 for the way it's taught. I'd imagine that this is not true for all courses offered here, though.

-Finally, a lot of people complain about the lack of social life or extracurriculars here. While this is probably true, I didn't find life that difficult, so I guess it's a matter of personal taste.I do recommend this school if you really don't know what you want to do with your life and want a general all-around education, or if you're interested in History, Historic Preservation, or Archeology (all these departments are excellent here). However, if you've got a clear plan of what you want to do with your education, are particuarly academically ambitious, or are very keen on doing research, I'd recommend passing on UMW.

Question
I just finished my freshman year at MaryBrightEducation
I just finished my freshman year at Mary Wash and overall, I am really happy. I met some truly amazing people who have become my best friends.

Some things I liked about the school was its size-the small size of the student body and the campus itself allowed for me to constantly see people I knew while walking around campus or eating at one of the two dining areas.

However, at the same time, as much as I loved this small school feeling-it was also frustrating at times because when I did want some space it became hard to find when I was always running into people you know.

For this reason, I would often head downtown on the weekends to get away and do my work-Hyperion, a coffee shop downtown was perfect for this.

As far as academics go, my classes were not that challenging for general education classes and I found most of them quite interesting and the professors to be friendly and organized.

I expect my classes next year to be much harder but I look forward to it.
The social scene at MW leaves something to be desired. The parties are not bad but are often a bit overcrowded and typically consist of the same people--you don't meet many new people unless you really venture out and go places you have never been before because only a small percentage of the school really goes out it seems...but for this reason you are able to know the names of most of the people you party with and get to know them on a more intimate level-something that you might not be able to do at a bigger "party school," and as a result you create more of friends rather than drinking buddies.

Overall, i really enjoyed my freshman year at school and am excited for next year.Come to Mary Wash if you want a relaxed atmosphere in all aspects of college-academics and social life included.
