As for CSPD (Center for Student Professional Development), they are great. I have gotten internships with two Fortune 500 companies. You definitely have to initiate this yourself though.
Most importantly, the "Fox Advisors" are absolutely horrible. I have had nothing but problems trying to get help figuring out classes to take, switching majors, general inquiries, etc. Even when I did go to figure out my last 4 semesters of classes, my advisor FORGOT to write down Making an appointment online is difficult, and god forbid you need to speak with someone during their busy times. There are literally lines out the door the beginning and end of the semester. Once you get an appointment, also be warned they are not very helpful; they expect you to know exactly what you want and get irritated if you ask a question that can be found on the website. The department seriously needs to add more advisors, it's ridiculous.Overall, I think if you can find your niche in the school you will be ok. I have never gone to another large institution but I would assume they have the same problems.
All that said, there are a few things that i think incoming freshman should know before they come...
1) when signing up for housing, if you're in Communications, DO NOT, and i repeat...DO NOT!!! sign up for the "Learning Community" program. Not only do you get the crappiest dorm *Hardwick*, but you'll be put on the top floor where it's always at LEAST 10 degrees hotter than the rest of the building.
2)Buy your books at Zavelli's, it's much cheaper than the bookstore. MUCH MUCH cheaper.
3)If you live in Johnson 'n Hardwick, expect to have on average of one fire alarm a week...and if you're lucky, they'll all be in b/w 2am - 5am :)
4)NEVER FORGET DIAMOND DOLLARS ARE REAL MONEY!! :)
I expected to come to college and feel liberated, but I feel trapped here because the only place to shop that is in walking distance is rite aid, and you can never go anywhere by yourself really any time at night.
The education here is good, but my major, Tourism and Hospitality management at Temple offers a lot of programs that partner with many different businesses in Philadelphia and for someone who realized that Philadelphia is not for her, this really just is upsetting because when you're scared you cannot take advantage of these opportunities.Next year I am transferring to a more suburban campus in search for a more "college" experience. Overall Temple is a good school, but be sure you're in love with Philadelphia before you decide on making Temple your college choice.
