I am a first year student at Rit,BrightArt & Design Department
I am a first year student at Rit, I am a graphic design major.
Your fist year you will start with foundation courses, this includes 2d, drawing, 3d and your liberal arts requirements, electives.

These classes all though seem tedious because of the amount of work and time they acquire are very beneficial in the end, you will learn a lot of elements and skills that help you with your design process, major. For example, you will learn color theory, craftsmanship, presentation , etc.

Craftsmanship-that is one of the biggest one, professors are very nit pick about how well something is done.

2d-is a class of traditional and digital art, possibly one of my favorites,
Drawing-be prepared to draw nude models(not good looking ones either more women and men in their 40-60s)

3D-lots of building and creating with your hands
The students, if you put effort to be social and open are all very friendly and willing to get to know each other. You have to find something to do, although the college itself registers a lot of events for the students, we have had comedians, magicians, singers and game days , etc.

*Get SEASON HOCKEY tickets-it's a must, its a hot event , to go to and meet new people, cheer on the RIT TIGERS

Classes are quarterly this means 11 weeks of packed up work, midterms and finals so you "will be" Busy.

For design majors finals are usually a final design project rather than a test.
There are plenty of places to eat on campus and thats a chill thing to do with friends, as well as clubs and on campus parties, you just have to find them and know the party people. The college is very academically focused, be prepared to work a lot and have a lot of competitions, live critiques.

Very good, challenging design program.Quite BrightArt & Design Department
Very good, challenging design program. Co-op not really that good in design, which is why it wasn't required for graduation. RIT has only two problems for girls:

1.Cold weather: We girls get cold easier than the guys. I love the cold, but it was even too cold for me. People said that it gets frigid here, but I really didn't understand that till I got here. Brrrrr.

2. Lack of on campus appartments: There are only a few appartments "near" the academic buildings. For many other appartments, you need a bus to get to the academic buildings. You would think that with the 1300 or so acres owned by RIT they would build appartments within easy walking distance to classrooms, but sadly this isn't the case. However, academics were very good especially in art and design. Also having almos two guys for each girl isn't bad if you are a girl. However, even with that, deign students don't generally meet a lot of folks from other majors due to our time commitments in design. There is a LOT of work in design. Unlike high school where you are given plenty of time to finish projects ( mostly), here you work late finishing projects and get up early for class. Forget about the days of sleeping long hours except on weekends.

Everything that I would have said, has beenQuite BrightArt & Design Department
Everything that I would have said, has been said. The academics are great in your major. Liberal arts aren't that strong, but people don't come here for RIT's liberal arts.Art and Design department is very strong. In fact, it clearly rivals the top schools. Facilities are great. Dorms and food are good. RIT just needs something else. In a frigid envirnment like Rochester, you really need to have a "self contained" city. They need bowling allies, more movies, CDs for rent etc.
