Positive Negative Neutral Advice
I entered RIT in the new Game DesignBrightOther
I entered RIT in the new Game Design program, figuring that it would be cool to design and program video games. However, I quickly found that not to be the case, in fact, the programming professors made class so hard and boring, that my love of game development/programming was forever stabbed with a rusted butter knife. Half the time the servers we were supposed to test our code on crashed, and we had to create our own servers, as the teachers would not own up to their mistake and inability to maintain their computers. Also, to boot, the professors not only made us stay up late into the night, but required it for success. After pulling an abysmal 2.3 GPA my second quarter, I switched to Information-Technology (IT) and amazingly, the professors in this department are much more approachable, and explain things a lot better. We are not expected to be expert coders like in Game Development. the assignments are reasonable as well, and are not designed to torture us. On the social side, its not as bad as people say, there are many clubs, athletic teams and other opportunities to meet people, and I have met quite a few friends from these. However, many of the female students on campus (due to the male-female ratio) have unpleasant attitudes and get SICK of guys fast, so don't expect to hook up, unless you want a serious kind of relationship. Also, despite what other people say, there are parties here, even though they are not every day... and yes people do drink here despite the campus safety lurking around at all hours of the night.

Question
I came in not knowing what I wantedQuite BrightOther
I came in not knowing what I wanted to do. The "Career Exploration" program here is very helpful. I was looking forward to gettign away from home and going to a prestigous college, not realizing how much propaganda is spread by not only the university but also some of the students, when scoping out colleges. The first trimester or two I spent getting sucked into the negative aura from my peers. Then I realized the place wasn't so bad afterall and it was going to be what I made it, so I turned optimistic and looked at the positives rather than the negatives. One common complaint was the food on campus, but it really wasn't all that bad, and compared to most other colleges we are doing very well in the food department. Sure there is an "abundance of weiner" but I knew that before coming here and I can learn to deal with it. There are other colleges nearby with more females, and there are quite a few girls on campus that wouldn't be all that bad. Another thing I leanred: unlike in high school, going to class is a must if you want to get good grades. You m ay be able to pull off low to mid Bs not going to class...depending on your professor...but going to class and getting As is a much better choice. We don't get as many days off as other schools, however we are on trimesters and learning more material, and faster, than our off-campus comrades giving us an edge once we leave the academic community and join the real (working) world. There are a lot of things that people try to twist to make RIT look bad but if you really look (and you don't even have to look ALL that hard) you can see that most of it is actually for the better. I highly recommend this University to anyone looking for a quality education, and not only in the tech fields. The Liberal Arts college here is very good (think about it, Liberal Arts are the core of all programs) and the Business college is also top-class.

Question
The university is good technologically, but almost tooQuite BrightOther
The university is good technologically, but almost too good. People here have no social skills because they are engrosed with technology and find it easier to use email rather than person to person contact. They waste endless money trying to make the campus more beautiful, however with harsh bricks and the architexture, there just no hope. The variety of people is amazing. Art to engineering, with few in the middle.
