Positive Negative Neutral Advice
I've read some of the reviews and itQuite BrightNutrition
I've read some of the reviews and it sounds like a lot of the kids complaining are looking for a party school. I transferred into RIT from taking a few years off of school. Yes the course work is very challenging and the campus is a bit drab, but the school really seems concern that you get a job. About the nutrition dept. at first I was upset about it being connected to the hospitality school, but after learning what make a successful dietitian it makes sense to learn some of the skills like food production and marketing. The co-op are in place for you to network and to insure that you have a one-up when you apply for the internships. RIT is all about teaching young students what it well be like in the real world, but this is hard for students who have already worked in the real world and this can be frustrating at time. But this program does have a lot of connections in the Rochester area and a lot of the dietitians around here graduated from RIT. All in all I hope I am getting what I paid for in this school (I'm pretty sure that I am).

Question
I think RIT gets a bad rep becauseBrightElectrical Engineering
I think RIT gets a bad rep because people think it cool to trash things that aren't perfect. Wake up, there isn't a "perfect" college.

On that note, my goal going into college was to get a job. I have 9 months to graduate, and myself and 4 friends have already accepted offers. Thats saying something. And the faculty can't be beat- they want you to succeed. If you make an effort and go to every class, they know your name. And not for just that class, for the next 5 years.

As far as tutoring, I have never had a problem going to a professor's office hours for help. Actually, most of the time it isn't their office hours I go, its when I'm free. There is 2 engineering tutors from 8am to 9pm every weekday in the engineering building. There is Academic Support for math and science, and math tutors all the time in the math building. Don't expect everything to be told to you 10x and laid out exactly. You are in college. Once or twice being told there is help should suffice. (In terms of material comprehension and where to get help)

Oh, and I don't expect a college to baby me and keep me entertained. I can do that by myself, whether its going out with friends or hitting up the coffee shop for live music and a board game. If you want to party, there are enough bars and frat houses around, just don't expect Animal House. Don't close yourself in your room and whine "no one invites me anywhere" and you'll find there is plenty to do at RIT and the surrouding areas. In fact, we have more crazy stories because we keep ourselves entertained.

Overall, I like it. I don't have school spirit, but I also know that I'm getting a damn good education. Social life is what you make of it. As far as diversity, I don't know what they are talking about "not being diverse". Every single class I have ever been in has a good percentage of minorities, and RIT has a huge staff of minority professors. You probably don't see them because they are being active somewhere else instead of walking to class. Which is about all you see "touring" the campus. If you don't want to be babied and have everything handed to you, check it out. You will without a doubt learn a lot about yourself and your discipline. Good luck, quarters are tough, but take responsibility for your work and you'll do fine.

Question
When I was accepted into RIT I wasAverageOther
When I was accepted into RIT I was very excited. The first time I visited the campus I thought it was like a prison. There are so many bricks and all the buildings are pretty much the same. Everything is so close together and I feel like I'm not at a college but at a prison.

I filled out my housing information and was looking forward to living in the dorm. I was very disapointed when I was not put into a door but at the RIT INN, which is not on campus and I had to fight to get onto the small shuttle bus to get to campus. The shuttle bus only came every 40 min and it would take 1 hour breaks. It was so rediculous. Not only was i placed in the hotel but my roomate was an art student and I was a science student. She never had anything to do and I was always trying to study but couldnt because she was so distracting.

The people that say the classes are to big and its hard to get personal attention must be the people who never went to class. The first year science classes are classes that include around 150 to 200 kids. If you go to class everyday you will realize that out of that 150-200 students about 80 of them come to class. The professors are always willing to answer questions during class. Also, many of them will alow you to schedule apointments to meet with them if you can't make it to their office hours. The labs only include about 20-30 students and you work in a group of 4 or 2. The upper math classes also include a lab which gives the students an oppertunity to get the help they need. There are always tutors avaliable from 8am to sometimes 9 or 10 pm in almost any course willing to help you.

Many of science classes professors will use mycourses which is really sweet. Mycourses basical will show you all of your assignments and grades. Some professors post online quizes and also class notes. It is a very helpful site and its great for people who like to monitor how well they are doing in a course.

I was a transfer student coming into RIT. Some suggestions for tranfer students or anyone who is not a freshman would be to get the all debit meal plan. Freshmen have to have the gracies food plan which would suck because thats the only place you can eat. IF you get the all debit meal plan you can eat at quiznos on campus, plus there are tons of places to eat around campus that have real food and not the crap they serve at gracies... plus you can buy anything from the cornor store or Sals which are in the tunnels in the dorms. All in all, RIT is not a bad school. Its just very stressful and hard to get back on track if you get pushed off. So dont skip class and get behind. Your professors dont care if you pass or fail so you are responsible for yourself.
