I wrote earlier as a biology major.Quite BrightOther
I wrote earlier as a biology major. I have recieved several inquiries, so I decided to post again (forgot ID/pass). I wouldn't say Carolina is an inherently bad place, but it's definitely not the best among the alternatives for an undergraduate degree. The sheer size and vastness of it's bureaucracy alone make it a less than desirable place for an undergraduate. I would recommend this place for graduate school to those that can handle the challenge and under appreciation, "comfortably". I would not recommend studying Biology here. I'm confident enough to say the retention rate is horrible for that department. It's partially students fault, but predominately it's the professors inability to effectively convey their knowledge to the students or remind them why they're reading the textbook anyway. What's the point of preaching to the choir? Which happens to be the case in many of those science classes. I've enjoyed my tumultuous time because of the amount of personal growth and sense of self-accomplishment. I know whatever my grade is I've definitely earned it. There are very few classes if any that give you anything, you have to take it. However, do I think it was worth it? No, I think there is a point where you realize the University is a little too serious and should really just lighten up. It's great to learn, accept responsibility for oneself, and face failure; but you aren't paying someone to have them capitialize on every little weakness you may have. It's safe to say beer gets many good students through Carolina..lol

Question
UNC provided a wonderful education for me.Quite BrightPsychology
UNC provided a wonderful education for me. I started out as a Biology major (as did practically everyone) and decided to change to Psychology when I discovered I just didn't want to do Bio for a living. I am now a grad student at another state university, and the differences are enormous! UNC provides up-to-date technology and services for students. If you don't want to be considered a "number" and aren't willing to do something about that, then UNC is not for you. But, if you're willing to drop an email to your prof or TA, and meet other students, and simply open a door for someone or offer directions to a visitor, then you'll do JUST FINE at UNC. I never went anywhere where I didn't see someone I knew (and I'm shy) and the sense of pride and loyalty on that campus is amazing. If you're serious about your education (as you SHOULD be, if you got into Carolina) then your professors will respect you, help you, and best of all, expect the best out of you. Carolina students are cream of the crop... but occasionally bad apples get in. Those who hate UNC are the ones who were challenged and failed to rise.

Question
I transferred to UNC because of its dazzlingQuite BrightHistory/Histories (art history/etc.)
I transferred to UNC because of its dazzling academic reputation. That was a terrible mistake. I have since learned that this reputation, while stellar, is based entirely on RESEARCH and GRADUATE PROGRAMS. If you are an undergraduate here, you are totally worthless in the eyes of most faculty. You will be herded like cattle into huge lecture classes where bored TAs do most of the teaching (with palpable resentment). The experience for undergraduates here is truly disheartening...and it doesn't get better either; even upper level classes for juniors and seniors are lecture classes with 200+ students. The professors are notoriously left-wing, and treat their classes as opportunities to indoctrinate students with their warped worldview. (Were you aware that America is evil? Don't worry, your professors will explain it to you). No matter what you may see in the glossy guidebooks, please stay away form this university!!! It's a fine place to get a Ph.D, but a terrible place for an undergraduate. I know that it is a hard school to get into, but it is depressing how UNC assembles such a smart student body and then treats them all like dirt. After all these years here, I have learned nothing of value...no one here is intersted in whether you learn or not, they just want your tuition dollars. Far from being considered one of the nation's best schools, UNC should be at the very bottom. IF YOU ATTEND UNC, YOU WILL REGRET IT!!! Oh, and avoid the history program -- they hate undergraduates there.
