I'm an instate student and came to UNCSuper BrilliantBiology
I'm an instate student and came to UNC without knowing practically anyone. After attending UNC for three years, I can honestly say it has been the best overall experience of my life. I have made many great friends over this time and don't regret my choice for one moment. The academics at UNC are tough, especially the sciences, but I feel that they prepare you extremely well for further studies. The atmosphere at Carolina is great, it is big enough that it doesn't feel like everyone knows each other and there are great resources, but small enough that every time I walk around I see a familiar face. The school has a great non-academic atmosphere as well: from basketball games, hundreds of student run clubs, and the college town atmosphere is great. The greek scene is certainly present, but also doesn't dominate campus with only about 15% going greek. I can't speak enough on how great an experience I have had here. I'm going to med school next year, and am strongly considering staying at UNC-Med because of the great moments that I have had here.

Question
The best advice I can offer is thatPsychology
The best advice I can offer is that you find a school advisor who represents the field(s) in which you are interested, and stick w/ that advisor. UNCCH is big, and among that many students it is easy to get lost in the crowd. I have no regrets, however I do think that finding the right advisor for my scholastic interests/concerns and demanding that I be permitted to stick w/ that advisor - instead of allowing the university to randomly assign me to one - would have greatly improved the quality of my experience at Carolina. Also, don't stress out! Study and you will do well.

Question
I graduated from UNC three years ago --History/Histories (art history/etc.)
I graduated from UNC three years ago -- and I really wish I hadn't gone there. I can't speak for other departments, but my experience in the History department was absolutely dreadful. In general, the professors there aren't interested in undergraduate students. Most of the classes are huge impersonal lecture halls. I was a senior before I had a class under 50 people. When I did try to talk to professors, they were by and large extremely rude and condescending. It was such a disheartening experience that I considered transferring several times. The school is a vast machine with a huge bureaucracy that is maddening to navigate. UNC exists for professors -- it is a place for them to publish, to get tenure, to hold conferences, etc. UNC does not exist for its students. It is a horrendous place at which to be an undergraduate it you want a high-quality, personal education. Maybe things have changed since I went there, but I doubt it. It has probably gotten worse.
