My first encounter on Earlham College Campus was during my college visit. I thought the student leading us through the tour was joking when he said, "do not attend this college," but then during my attendance found most upper class man were saying the same thing and most first years had heard something similar during their visits. The school is close knit and because of this complaints are well heard and wide spread, within the student body, it is rare to ever hear or encounter a college administrator actually looking to help lead the school progressively. Most of the common complaints revolve around the lack correspondence between housing and the students and all administrative staff and the students. It's quite normal to send multiple e-mails to an administrator and not hear back for weeks/months or until the students finally search said administrator out and pin them for an answer. Students that are looking for helpful administration SHOULD NOT ATTEND EARLHAM COLLEGE. Also, the food is god awful, but luckily the offer a vegetarian/vegan room (which the students set up) that is deliciousa! All the workers in the cafeteria rock so there's no trouble on that end. On a more personal note there is no reason to feel safe on Earlham College Campus. After being sexually assaulted, finding out that this was the third act of assault by the student THAT WAS REPORTED AND IGNORED I began to feel extremely uncomfortable at the school. A few weeks later the same student that assaulted me also took a frying pan and beat other students cars in the parking lot, the police were called, security was called, and the final results was the student being told to "go lay down." No further punishment was dispersed even though he was underage and breathalyzed, the results showed lack of sobriety. I was diagnosed with PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) and went through therapy to retrieve lost memory and hopefully focus on school. Through this process I was struggling to remain on campus and tried multiple times to get off campus for living. The school viewed my request was ignored and treated me as a liar constantly trying to silence me. I moved off campus and had to pay rent while continuing to pay for living on campus. When approaching the security guards on the issue of my safety one night they agreed that this student was a threat and hoped that I would help set him up in something more tangible, as if rape isn't tangible, like a drug bust. I refused. I returned home in July and later went to meet with Bonita Washinton Lacey about where my attendance stood with the school. She smoothly and I might add slyly convinced me to take a "medical leave," which insinuates I can return whenever I lack but never have to actually return if I don't care to. In the meantime I would stay at home and do what was needed to take care of myself. I thought this was a caring approach from Bonita. I was extremely pleased to be told that this student, "would not be around upon my return." (Said Bonita). Leaving Bonita's office I immediatly called my family, best friends, and some former Earlham students to tell them the good news that Earlham had expelled the assaulter. I believed finally the school had woke up. That finally the school saw that a student who has threated/assaulted up to three of their students, should be taken off campus. One semester later I was proved wrong, he had only been suspended, and was now back on campus. Luckily I had not returned to Earlham but when asking to receive my transcripts, I was denied, for a $500 dollar fee. My tuition was paid in full, adding to over $80,000 because I was not at the school on scholarship. Earlham is an inconsistency. The administration has no back bone and no pride. If an education that teaches to respect oneself and no one else, to protect even when it means dishonesty, to close ears to the struggling and eyes to pain, then by all means attend the school. All a student receives at Earlham College is an empty pocket and a sucked dry mind. Find a school that teaches answers not just questions. (If you love drugs, disrespect, inconsistency, and easy A's go to Earlham. If you want an education and an administration that holds you to any kind of standard above 'worthless' choose a different school. Hey the school doesn't have to be full of hardasses just think seriously about how comfortable it is to be in a school where sexual violence, verbal and physical abuse, high depression rates, suicide rates, and death rates prevail).
