I am torn. One one hand, Beloit has been a wonderful place for me, academically. I specifically chose Beloit because of its Creative Writing program, and I love the education I've received here. I have been so impressed with nearly every professor I've had, I feel they care about nurturing me as a student and a writer, and I know I have learned so much and become a much better writer thanks to my time here. This has been the right place for me, from an academic standpoint. Unfortunately, socially, Beloit did not give me the college experience I was looking for. That shouldn't be underestimated - more than half of what you learn in college doesn't happen inside a classroom. For a place that thinks of itself as so open-minded and accepting, I sure had a hard time fitting in. Many students are friendly and interesting, but it was always difficult to get to know them beyond a surface level because people are very clique-y here. I felt suffocated by the over the top liberal and "politically correct" attitude on campus. It was difficult to ever feel like I could just be myself. If you're not into Dr. Who and social constructs and raging feminism, it'll be difficult to find a group of friends. Overall, the writing education I received was wonderful and many professors here are brilliant. You just need to weigh how important a well-rounded college experience is to you. Beloit was too small and it suffocated me. It was not the community I had been told it was. If I could do it over, I would pick a different school.
