Academics: Some of the intro classes can be a bit tedious, but once you get past those, you will find a remarkable faculty who are approchable, caring, passionate about what they teach, and commited to helping every student succeed. Coursework is challenging, and if you don't do the reading or scan it in the last ten minutes before class, the professor will definitely be able to tell. All profs are a on a first-name basis with students, which is an interesting twist. Social Life: Richmond, Indiana is definitely not Boston or New York, but honestly, if you are an Earlham student, you knew that going in. I really don't see the point of complaining about something you were fully aware of before you enrolled. I spent most of my time on campus, which I love because of the awesome people that inhabit this place. Earlham students have a very unassuming quality to them which makes for a really nice atmosphere. I have made a great many friends who I expect to remain in contact with long after I leave. It is a small school, so social life is very intimate and at times melodramatic. This really doesn't bother me because of the great people I've met, but you should be prepared for that. Other things: Earlham markets itself as a "dry campus" in accordance witht he quaker principles on which it is founded, but there is ample drinking. However, there is no pressure for non-drinkers and you can always find something to do that doesn't involve substances. Most weekend activities involve parties at houses which are just off the main campus, and I often spend my time at thos parties on the porch with other students having great conversations. Bottom line: Earlham has been great for me and many others, but no place is perfect. People seem to be under the impression that there is some perfect school out there waiting for them like a soulmate...and the fact is that there isn't. If you go in with an open mind and a willingness to stretch your comfort zone, your experience should be great.
