Major: (This Major's Salary over time)
As a third year biology major I'm very satisfied with the education I've received at Earlham. I don't care that Richmond Indiana is not Cambridge MA. or Berkeley CA. and I didn't come to Earlham for the location, the food, or some supposed warm and fuzzy social scene. I came for the education, which is as good as any Liberal Arts education in the country. Having got that out of the way, it should be said that Earlham is not some liberal oasis. Owing to its Quaker affiliation, Earlham is usually portrayed as some community of tolerant, leftist, liberal free thinkers. That happens "on the stage." Behind the curtain, Earlham is as rock-ribbed Republican as the Chamber of Commerce. Landrum Bolling wasn't the head of the Lily Endowment without his conservative benefides being fully vetted and a cursory glance at the college donors reveal many of the most conservative foundations in the country. Earlham benefits mightily from playing both sides of the street - one side socially conscience liberals and the other raking in the corporate money by never taking a stand on any social issue as an institution. Of course the college encourages "individuals" to participate as their conscience dictates. So come for the education but don't buy the liberal hokum. And for what its worth, whenever Earlham says "community" substitue "conformity" to get closer to the truth. Also, review the treatment of Erika Eisenberg to remove any lingering beliefs in Earlham's all caring PR message. One would be well advised to look at how the endowment has grown over the last forty years - that money wasn't from tree hugging and pot luck dinners.
