Earlham is an incredibly unique place and can offer a wide variety of experiences for people searching for something new and different in their lives. We have a high rate of international students and a variety of viewpoints to be heard. That said, it's not for everyone. People with a conservative background may have a difficult time here because the discourse is overwhelmingly liberal. Also, people may have difficulties finding their niche. However, at least in my experience, there are many people enthusiastic about getting to know each other, and I find that I can hang out with almost anyone at this school if I show interest. There are many extracurricular opportunities and it's not hard to become very involved and become the person organizing them. Also, I find the accessibility of the professors to be overwhelmingly positive. All of my professors know me by name, and I know I can come into their office at just about any time to discuss any inspiration, problems, etc. I'm having in the class. From my experience, they have all been more than willing to help and want to see students excel. The food here is not amazing, but just like at any school, it's mostly cafeteria food. However, many upperclassmen opt out of the meal plan and end up cooking a lot delicious food together. We also have a college farm people can live on where they can grow some of their own produce. There are some places in town which are great, but you have to work on finding them or learn from people who have been on campus for a while. Also, I feel that people who complain about the community have tried very little to actually get out into it. There are dozens of opportunities to be found in the town, including involvement with translation work, volunteering at animal shelters, working with Habitat for Humanity, or getting a paid internship at the town's newspaper (just to name a few.) We also have a beautiful back campus of woods which can provide much exploration and an opportunity for relaxation. Overall if you go here, you have to be okay with spending a lot of your time on campus. But for me, I wouldn't take back any of it. I feel that I am receiving an education that has changed the way I will think and analyze for a lifetime.
