I'm having a great time at UNCW now, but I must admit, I hated it my first year. I was really curious about UNCW before I came here, so here's my comprehensive overview UNCW is, without a doubt, the least diverse place I have ever been to in my entire life. My friends working in James Hall said UNCW Admissions has admitted that they are not a diverse place and that's not going to change anytime soon. It's no big deal if you fit into the UNCW mold (Raleigh/Apex/Charlotte, surfing and longboarding brah or white southern belle with monogrammed everything/khaki and visor wearing fratty guy) but if you don't, it can take some getting used to. I wanted to thrown down for Manischewitz Madness, but nobody knew what Passover was. You get the idea. Other than that, people are generally nice, cheerful, and have a sunny outlook on everything. On the flipside, they can be standoffish and are VERY cliquey. We have a very attractive and fit student body. It's stunning to see that many blondes in one community. People are relaxed when it comes to how they dress. DEFINITELY not a fashionable school. Everyone on Chancellor's Walk looks like theyre dressed to go to the gym or beach - t shirts, nike shorts, and rainbows. Living in the dorms was pretty amazing. If you want to meet a million people and have a great social life, stay in Galloway or the U Apartments! Dorms are cleaned and maintained pretty well. I had some of the best times of my life with my floormates in the beginning, but the girls and floors got cliquey with each other really fast, that's when I started to hang out with Greeks. Greek life can either take up your entire social life (whether youre in one or not) or just be entirely out of the picture - that's up to you. If you want to go wild, pick one of the two aforementioned places. If you're not into drinking, stay in Schwartz. Even honors kids are balanced with partying and studying. House parties are really fun, especially first semester. After that, when people have found their groups, a lot of it turns into apartment drinking. Alcohol Law Enforcement infiltrated Wilmington for a while, so partying died down, but the fuckers are gone! Besides the ALE, cops don't really give a shit. They will never write tickets at a party, just tell you to go home. There's no spot on campus to party, so people usually pregame in the dorm and take a cab to parties across Wilmington. Brickle is where it's at! Downtown is a lot of fun too, but only on Thursday nights. Oh, they call it UNCW for a reason...UNCWeed. There's a lot of that here. There are a good amount of people who really want to take their lives somewhere (a lot of them being Greeks) but there's also a really good amount of people who are pretty apathetic about learning and just want to party and cheat their way through school. I'd say 50/50. UNCW has been described as "the kids who are smart enough to get into Chapel Hill, just don't apply themselves that much." The ones that do achieve something are usually pretty balanced though - you won't find any neurotic overachievers here. It's really laid back here, but it might be too laid back for some people. The classes I've been in so far (mostly basic studies) have not been challenging at all! A lot of people BS their way to an A or a B without any problems. I imagine classes do get harder as time goes on. If you get involved in your department and take the time to learn outside the classroom (oodles of opportunities - you just have to find them!) that will, without a doubt, make up for some of your easier classes! Campus dining is pretty good. No complaints, except they do weird things with the pizza in Wag. Stock up on food dollars and try to make them last - they'll go quick if you live anywhere near the convenience store! There are TONS of resources. Everywhere. There's an office or department for everything you'll ever need. I've been able to fix any problem or have any question answered immediately. There's a jillion clubs and organizations, definitely something in there for you, although I don't feel like everyone is involved. Somewhat understandable, considering the party scene is pretty good and going to the beach before/after/sometimes during class is PRICELESS. Weather is great here, a lot of times if the weather is nice, professors will have their class outside. Campus as well of the city of Wilmington are absolutely beautiful - longleaf pines, azaleas and oleanders everywhere. Definitely drive (oh, bring a car if you can. The "Wave" campus shuttle is a joke and you have to go off campus to get to Walmart, the beach, downtown etc) all the way down College Road - camping out on Carolina Beach is probably the best thing ever, pass by the colorful houses of Kure Beach and end down at Fort Fisher and go to the aquarium!! Surfing is definitely a big thing here. People talk about the wave forecast more than the weather forecast. If you don't know, it's a great place to learn! Campus and its resources are the best of the best, absolutely amazing. I love learning and living here. Nobody would disagree, Wilmington is sunny paradise. What almost made me transfer out was the PEOPLE...I didn't fit into the Southern preppy prototype and had to deal with that. I feel like UNCW students hang out with their high school friends a lot and don't really like to meet anyone after the first two months of school, and Greeks only talk to other Greeks or freshman girls. I couldn't imagine how awful it would be to transfer here mid-semester. Whatever, it took me a while to find the diamonds in the rough, but I found a GREAT group of people and I'm loving UNCW 100%! Come visit!
