Definetely Read This. I am actually writing this while on vacation in a 3rd world country with poor internet access because I want new students to get what NU is all about. NU is the choice for students who didn't get into their first choice. It also happens to be for kids who got in beyond their expectations or students aiming for particular schools like Medill. Social Life sucks. Apart from the Greek scene and the cold weather, there is little movement on the sidewalks after 8 pm. Everyone is holed up in their housing units. The campus has the shape of an elongated rectangle which contributes to poor centralization of any social activities. Whereas other campuses either are more of a square shape or have walls containing the campus hence giving it a "homely" feeling. If you are not in the Greek system, you will be surrounded mostly by Indian American students who will literally bore you with details about medical schools from day one. If you are into business career: there is no undergrad business major- unlike Wharton at Penn. If you are into diversity, culture, a bit of liberal , yuppie, international feel....you will be extremely disappointed. If you happen to be that type of a person- stay away from the MidWest by any means. You find sophistication on the West Coast and mostly on the East Coast. The international student body is really weak at NU. They are given no scholarships and NU is not very well known internationally. Being in the Midwest, they hardly have any celebrities or high level politicians coming here. I did not enjoy my experience at NU. Many of the freshman and soph classes are meant to ruin your GPA--so beware. Honestly, rankings matter. But your grades will matter more. I wish I had attended Georgetown instead. It is in the center of action- sophisticated international flavor, classy....smart.. Consider schools in Dallas, LA, NYC , DC .....and if you are not into big towns, go to a nice cozy homely school like University of Vermont which I visited and enjoyed the serene atmosphere. NU has been dropping in the ranks for the past 15 years. Henry Beinen is just getting too lazy to care anymore. If you wish to spend the next 4 years of your life either in Greek system drinking and hanging with MidWestern kids or being out of Greek and hanging with Indians discussing Medical School go to NU. If you want to attend a school where you meet with your class friends over at a cafe one evening and then go out with your dorm buddies to A NIGHTCLUB not a BAR and dance with a girl from Venezuela one minute and another girl from Holland another minute and feel comfortable wearing a suit and heading out,,then don't go to NU. NU will not teach you a thing about culture. Do yourself a favor, visit the schools before accepting the invitation. Grab a map of the campus, mark the student center...mark out how many cafes are in the area... Your NU degree is inferior to a USC or UCLA one on the West Coast. It is inferior to Gerogetown on the East Coast. If you are heading into business career, NU means they will keep you stuck in the MIDWEST....stuck in Chicago.....think wisely
