The teaching faculty and coursework at Earlham were very good. I was there a long time ago (1988-1990) so hopefully the negatives have been changed. My advice to incoming students is that your Freshamn dorm placement largely determines your social success at school. At Earlham, so much socialization is centred on campus that having a strong peer support group is a MUST. I am from a conservative background, though as an individual I don't "fit the mold." Therefore when I entered I was not prepared to ask some tough identity questions and was denied the opportunity to do so. I was on the "single sex" hall of Earlham dorm, where the inhabitants were snooty, conventional (not traditional and religious, but conventional partying college students) and exclusive. I wanted to switch to Hoerner dorm, then a "study dorm" with more unconventional students, but the then HR of Earlham Hall took a personal vendetta against me and refused to let me move. Socially I gravitated to the ultra-traditional Jewish community of Indianapolis and, for better or worse, this choice affected my life for years to come. Looking back, "I think those with the "loud hippie" mentality were trying to force me to question, when I should have been given the space and respect to do this on my own. Hopefully Earlham has grown in wisdom over the years, as has our society. But I would like to forewarn entering students about potential cliques, and to affirm the importance-and your right- to be your own advocate regarding housing, especially as an entering Freshman. If this is such a nurturing open environment, it should be so for EVERYONE. Being able/willing to advocate for yourself is part of being ready for college. don't always assume you have to conform, that the other person is always right. If you are not HAPPY in your dorm situation DO NOT STOP until it is rectified. It is your identity, your mental health and your college career that is on the line.
