When I visited the college campus at Earlham and I was 18 I was very excited to be going there in the fall of 1997. As someone who has been out of college 8 years I can say now I would definitely enjoy a larger town than Richmond, IN. The classes were challenging more so than even the graduate school I went to. One ting I will say about Earlham is its very much geared to graduate school for humanities and sciences. At the time I went there, they didn't advise people to go to the working world. Also because Earlham is such a small school there seems to be a lot big personalities that use the open consenus environment to have their own personal agenda. This is both TRUE for FACULTY and students. Because people can have their opinion heard due to Quaker values, often students go to far (example pie in the face to guest speakers) this was an nationwide embarassment for the school and does not make me want to contribute alumni donations. This also occured in 2001 when Anne Coulter visited she was publically embarassed in the open forum. Really its the faculty I blame that they do not set higher expetations. The education is excellent and I wish now I would have take economics, management, or internation studies classes instead of just science classes. But all in all be prepared for a small town and big personalities in a small environment. One thing when I was there both the registar and Dean of students was excellent (both were african american women too) (FYI I am not African American so that's not what impressed me about them).
