College helped me get a job. More importantly was the connections I made with others through professional organizations after I graduate. The National Education Association, my union, was something I had to learn about on the job. I had to learn through experince how it protected my and my job as a public employee. I wish I had be taught more about the politics of public education. I recommend that every education major learn as much as possible about the political aspects of working in eduction in the public sector. How education is funded, how the teachers union(s) operate and influence public policy in regard to pubic education standards and requirements as well as for the being a continual "watchdog" profession itself.
