I went to Alfred for a year and a half thinking I was going to go into art. However, I decided to go into Environmental Science instead. This is truly an art and engineering school. If you're into either of those subjects then go for it. There are basically two groups of people at Alfred: the exclusive art student hippies, and the hick football players with their girlfriends. The parties are split up like that too. And of course there is Alfred State across the street to throw in some more po-dunk feel to the place. It is extremely small (and by extremely I mean you feel like you live in a field), and quite unique. If you are an art student though, and want a small hippie population that you will know very well when you walk on campus (because it's so small), then Alfred is an awesome place. As far as the quality of education... I had a few amazing professors that were some of the most intelligent, creative thinking people I've ever met. And the others weren't that bad; they were just average professors.
