To be honest, Northwestern wasn't one of my top choices when I submitted my college applications. I applied to an Ivy ED and got rejected. Then I placed applications to roughly ten other schools, but Northwestern was far and away the most prestigious university that accepted me. During New Student Week it seems like people at NU fall into two groups: the east/west coasters who got rejected from better schools, or the flyover state-residents who feel like they're lucky to be at Northwestern. But by the middle of the year, you'd be hard-pressed to tell the two apart. Northwestern, in my opinion, is a near-ideal educational institution. NU provides a perfect balance in all areas of relevance. Academically we're at or near the top in almost all fields. Athletically we're in the Big Ten - have fun beating all your other nerdy friends' schools in NCAA Football 08 for PS2. Socially, sure we've got some frats, but almost everyone is really chill and eager to meet people. Even in its location in Evanston, Northwestern maintains a perfect equilibrium. Catch a movie, hit the beach, have a candlelit dinner or a quick burger, buy whatever you need - and if it tickles your fancy, head downtown to a world city merely a half hour away on the train. Our extracurriculars are top-notch, both for networking and just having fun. I've personally met more famous people as a Northwestern freshman than I ever dreamed I'd meet. I'd recommend NU for just about anyone.
