I think that Earlham gets a lot of shit because of its location and intimate social life. I think the location has a lot more to offer than a lot of Earlham students discover, and while you should not come to Earlham if you're looking for an urban school, I think Richmond is very underrated. There isn't much to do in terms of nightlife, shopping and eating out, but there are a few great second hand shops, and nice local cafes and bars. What Richmond really has to offer though is a school system, and local gevernment that are willing to accept the help of Earlham students, and offer real world expereince in community, social, and education work. Volunteering regular hours at the highschool, planned parenthood, and going out to community events (school plays, local blue grass/ country rock concerts, rec-center fundraisers)on the weekends has helped me a feel a part of the community, and kept me busy enough to be satisfied with the lack of shopping and nightlife. Social life at Earlham (and all schools with under 2,000 students, I assume) is very intimate, cliquey, and sometimes overly dramatic. I don't mind all that much becuase I have some great friends, and I think that its worth it for the small classes and novelty of recognizing everyone. But you should be prepared for that.
