There are a few simple facts about this school that I shall try to make as clear as possible. I was disappointed in some aspects that I will mention, but perhaps others will like what I found lacking. #1 Professors here are very available and care about your education, and for you as a person. There are some professors I've had that I go and chat with once in a while for fun. #2 Creighton has a decent reputation with graduate schools. #3 Many students are premed. As such, nearly everything in the classroom is related to the MCAT. Also, the bio department is much more focused on getting you into med school than on research or theoretical ideas. #4 This is a very Christian campus. Tour guides may tell you otherwise, but it is very dominant. This means that many of the students believe that homosexuality is a disease, evolution doesn't exist, and you are going to hell for not believing what they believe. The majority are not extremists, but it can get very uncomfortable at times. #5 The administration is very conservative. This means that no members of the opposite sex are allowed in your room past certain hours, the Christian God is an appropriate topic to discuss in most classes and involve in assignments, and sometimes they will censor movies or pictures if they depict things not in line with the Catholic church. You will also be subject to random bag checks on your way into the dorms, and the desk workers will check your ID for you after 7 PM to make sure you live in that dorm. #6 Most policies that are passed must go through a parent board. This should tell you that many students are from the immediate area. As a (somewhat) humorous side note, an RA would technically have to write you up for having sex or masturbating because both are against university policy. #7 There is next to no diversity (ethnic, intellectual, religious). #8 One of the things that has bothered me the most is that for how much Creighton talks itself up, most of the students are not here because they love learning. Most either don't care about their classes and only want their A's so they can go to med school, or they just want to party. I personally know several people who got into Ivy league schools but decided to come here so that they could party more. You won't be sitting around having many intelligent conversations. #9 Most of the students can be quite friendly. #10 Most of the students (and sometimes the professors) do not want to be in core classes, and as such, they are a joke. #11 Only a few student organizations have much life them, and university funding is very difficult to obtain. #12 The area surrounding campus is not as dangerous as some say it is, but on the other hand, there is no place of interest in walking distance save Old Market. #13 There is a growing honors program that offers interesting classes and benefits. #14 Because it is a smaller school, resource use is limited. The campus is unbelievably small and Creighton doesn't have many great connections for summer internships. In all fairness, the administration is working to change this. #15 Realize that some programs are stronger than others. Creighton has decent chemistry and biology departments, but if you also have an interest in English, becoming fluent in another language, or the humanities, you may be disappointed. Quite frankly, Creighton may be a good fit depending who you are and what you want. I know people that love the place. But I would say if you are just looking for a decent education, a state school would offer the same education with more resources at a better price. If you are more ambitious than that, I would look elsewhere as well. There were few good schools near my home, and I was dazzled by Creighton. After giving it a year, I've decided to leave and attend a University that treats its students as adults and values intellectualism. I realize how snobbish that sounds, but if I can save anyone from making the same mistake I did, it's worth it.
