I graduated from Colby College two years ago, and still look back on the time that I spent there with fondness. To begin with though it must be stated that it is not a perfect experience. There are things about Colby that can certainly be perceived as negative, such as the surrounding area and the social life, but I will expound on that more in a moment. The bottom line is that you will get from your experience what you put into it. If you are willing to take chances and venture outside of your safety net you will meet people who will change the way that you think and interact with the world, whether these are students or faculty. A growing concern among students is the social scene. I witnessed the change from my freshman to senior year, with the increasing detterance of underage drinking and limitation of off campus activities. This is a blessing in disguise. College is intended, and especially a college like this, to enrich you, give you the tools neccessary to succeed after you graduate. When you are caught up in the moment some of these pervasive measures seem like a personal affront, as though there are people who want to bring you down, shackle you. But the truth is, it is only an attempt to bring you up, to give you the ability to control your own fate. It seems as though our media culture has created a myth of what the college experience should be, and if you are looking for the National Lampoon's experience, you will not find it at Colby. Not to say there aren't things to do for the party animal, but if that is what you want to define yourself, you would be best looking at another school. I was the definition of a contradiction of opposites. I was a part of the social scene, and at times created and pervaded the image. Upon my graduation I knew, and was known, by a vast majority of the students, and I was at every party. I had a lot of fun! But I also embraced what Colby could offer me academically, whether it was in the classroom, through extracurricular activities, or even just the human interaction with those that are different than myself. Now as I live and work in the outside world, I realize that what truly shaped me was the entire experience, not the partying, but the bonds that I made with faculty and students. You will find your niche if you look for it, the students are brilliant compared to the average human being, and the benefits of becoming that well rounded person will be an indispensible tool for your future. Waterville is what it is, a mill town with some pretty hard blue collar folk who do not understand what or who the students are. But embrace that difference and create bonds with the community that will benefit both the school and Maine itself. You will learn more from Colby than just the fields that you study, or the text books you read. You will learn about people, and define yourself as potential. All the tools are there, but utilizing them will be the challenge.
