When I enrolled at Earlham, they were the #2 small liberal arts college in the nation. Since then, they have fallen to # 69 according to the U.S. News & World Report annual ranking of schools. The student handbook forbids drinking and drug use, but there is widespread use and abuse of both substances among the student body. I had thought that the small student body size, plus the ban on alcohol and emphasis on tolerance would produce a community that would bond and interact together. Instead, I encountered a place where students who did not conform to the philosophies of the liberal majority were scorned and persecuted. I do not recommend Earlham College for the following reasons: - athletics (with the exception of certain women's sports) are not competitive - life on campus is not any fun. dry campus = no parties. i am not a fan of the greek system, but at least they have fun - classes focus on revisionist and alternative subjects to the exclusion of mainstream topics If you are looking for a place to study such majors as "Peace and Global Studies", "Human Development and Social Relations", and "African/African-American Studies", or if you are looking for a place where you look forward to watching the home team lose and then an evening in your dorm room with no parties to attend, then Earlham is the place for you. Yes, there are good things about the school. However, quality of life is not one of them.
