Major: (This Major's Salary over time)
I started at another college, but I was extremely unhappy there and decided to attend Stony Brook -- I'm quite satisfied with my decision. The education is great given the price of the school (an the fact that it's in the SUNY system) and there's a strong focus on research. There's a lot of diversity and a lot of opportunities to get involved on campus. The downside is the social life. Only half the students attending SB live on campus and it seems like more than half of those living on campus live in close distance to the school. The campus empties out on Thursday and by Saturday there's hardly anyone around. Many places on campus are closed or don't open until very late on the weekends. Unless you work or are lucky enough to know people that stay on the weekends, you'll most likely find yourself sitting in your room bored until Monday. The other downside would be the dorms. If you're looking to get a private room, chances are it won't happen. There's only 1 quad for unmarried undergrads with private rooms and there's only a handful of private rooms in each building in that quad. The apartments have some private rooms, but if you don't have a 3.0 GPA, you can't even get a double in the apartments -- and getting a single there is difficult unless you're an HSC student. Overall, SB is a good school at a great price. But just be warned if you're a student out of the area, the social aspect isn't the best.
