The support departments, specifically those within financial aid and the like are ran by the most unfriendly and unhelpful staff I have ever encountered in any environment. I have had to fight for aid monies twice after being told the money wasn't there, and ended up having the money. They don't care about the students, just run them through like cattle. The Anthropology department has a couple of great professors, but unfortunately, the department is not financially supported and there is little in the way of exciting fieldwork or research going on here. A real shame, as there are a couple of very capable professors here. If you're in Texas and interested in archaeology, better to head to A&M. Heavy book load in some courses; do NOT buy books at the campus or offcampus bookstores; much cheaper online. Wait a few weeks until you know which books you actually need for the class. Most of the courses here are easy, provided that you show up for class, take good notes, and study for exams. If "school spirit" is important to you, look elsewhere. This is a commuter college, and most students live off-campus and are not involved in a lot of social activities centered around the school; atheletic activities are very lightly attended. The neighborhood surrounding the campus is one of the worst in Houston; there are literally crack houses within a block of the campus. The campus is somewhat dangerous, particularly at night. Armed robbery and assaults are fairly common.
