Major: (This Major's Salary over time)
While I feel that many students would find Colby to be a great place, I do feel that I would be happier elsewhere. The social scene, for one, is entirely alcohol centered, so if you're not into drinking, you're going to have to work pretty hard to make your own fun. I thought I would like this sort of scene until I realized how repetitive it becomes and how it isn't fun to try to study on Sunday afternoons with a hangover. The town of Waterville isn't all that great and Maine in general doesn't provide a whole lot of fun activities if you're looking to get away from the alcohol scene. Coming from a suburban area in New Jersey, I grew up with the city at an arm's reach and this has definitely been a shock. Of course, there are plenty of outdoor activities to participate in, but if that's not your scene then you're kind of screwed. As far as the work goes, I was expecting it to be harder. Granted, I am a freshman and I'm taking primarily intro level classes, but I feel like you don't really have to do a whole hell of a lot of work to "get by." I'm sure things get more difficult as you get into upper level courses within your major, but so far I have been pretty much unchallenged with the exception of my economics course, which is offered by supposedly one of the most difficult departments at Colby. Even that class isn't really hard per se, it just kind of sucks that your grade is dependent upon how you do on two tests and a final and nothing else. If I had to make the college decision once again, I would go elsewhere. I hate struggling to find things to do every weekend, and I'm getting really sick of the super casual attitudes toward alcohol. I'll probably finish out the year and transfer elsewhere...
