Hofstra is a school with many problems. The quality of its academics is highly inconsistent. I majored in accounting which is one of the most highly regarded departments at the University. The accounting faculty consists of two different types of professors, easy professors who are incompetent and difficult professors who are cold. There is a loop hole in getting around the difficult accounting professors. This loop hole is notoriously used by the members of Beta Alpha Phi which is to join a cheating circle. An example, one tenured professor bases 60% of his grading on incrediably hard take home exams. About 90% percent of the students in his class would take the exam in groups of 10 and each person in the group would do only 10% percent of the exam and then everyone would consolidate their answers, this scheme was not allowed. I always took these take home exams alone, maybe because I was more antisocial then virtuous. As a result I got C's in the financial accounting classes while the other students got A's. It might be viewed that I am making an excuse for poor academic performance, but that is not the case. Upon graduating I passed 4 parts of the CPA exam on the first attempt with a 90 on the Financial accounting and reporting. Statistically my performance on the CPA exam was ranked nationally in the top 10% and certainly superior to the performance of most Hofstra's accounting students who took the exam. Unfortunately the grades I received in these accounting courses prohibited any opportunity for recruitment by accounting firms. I still am not able to find a job in public accounting So what am I doing now? Well, in addition to passing the CPA exam I also scored a 690 on the GMAT and since I can't find a job in public accounting with a degree from Hofstra, I'm going to pursue an MBA at a much more reputable school. Luckily I'm in a financial position to do this, but if I weren't I would be doomed to climb up from the sewer on the crappy job latter. What is the best thing I learn as a Hofstra student? I learned how to teach myself through Hofstra's school of hard knoxs.
