The two most useful things I learned at MIT: how to solve problems and what's truly important to me. I switched my major from engineering to political science, hung around a fifth year to get simultaneous bachelor's and master's degrees. I was in my department a short time and learned more there as an undergrad than I did in my Ph.D. program elsewhere. At MIT you will work hard but to survive mentally you'll have to learn to play hard as well. I found it hard to make friends in my classes -- in many social science and liberal arts departments graduate students take the same classes as undergrads, and 28 year olds have different interests than 18 year olds.
