How do you get in? One key word- specializationApr 12 2011Biology
How do you get in? One key word- specialization. Be REALLY REALLY good at something, but find some balance in life. When I say REALLY good, I mean nationals or internationals. Show passion in your extracurricular. Depth over breadth. However, try to do well in other activities as well, and take as many leadership roles as your high school schedule can handle. Admissions officers will see your passion, your hard work, and your leadership skills.

Have a good SAT/ACT score. Sure, defendants of mediocre scores will bleat that schools only use the score to CONSIDER a candidate. True, but an uber SAT/ACT means they'll consider you BETTER.

Be cool! Make sure your voice permeates the essays, and make sure you TALK with your interviewee. I cannot stress enough how, whenever I interview a student, important confidence is. Anytime I interview the stereotypical quiet Asian scholar, I shake my head and count off points.

Be cool with your counselor! Be a great student for at least several teachers! Recommendations count as well.

What matters is what college is the best fitFeb 13 2007History/Histories (art history/etc.)
What matters is what college is the best fit. Do your best academically, and pursue extracurriculars you love. The rest will fall into place.

I was sufficiently exotic, at the right feeder school,Sep 25 2006English
I was sufficiently exotic, at the right feeder school, had mostly above B grades, had won a few writing awards, spoke a few languages, and was involved in enough extracurriculars. And I bought the 10 SATs book and studied it (tested myself, then looked at why I got the answers wrong) until I increased my score by about 400 points. It's just a system. You can figure out how they want you to think if you play with it for a while.

Based on statistics, applicants who do well in schoolApr 09 2006Undecided
Based on statistics, applicants who do well in school have a better chance. However, at the heart of the matter, Yale is looking for cool kids who are leaders. Make that apparent in listing your extracurricular activities and essays. Be original. Be yourself. Be weird. Yale apparently likes that. Once you get here, you'll realize that EVERYONE here is weird; some people are just the legitimately-strange kind of weird, while others are just the legitimately-cool kind of weird. Weirdness breeds genius, I guess.
