Getting into UR was an amazing feat! It wasApr 08 2009Philosophy
Getting into UR was an amazing feat! It was recently named a "New Ivy," so it has gotten much more difficult to get in here. In high school, I was involved in everything. I played three sports, was on student council, in clubs, and did community service, all well getting high grades. I scored pretty well on the SAT, a 1320, and did extremely well on the math section (which is funny now, since math at UR is SO hard for me.) I applied early, and I also wrote a really meaningful essay that I'm sure helped. What I believe to be the most important aspect of my acceptance was that I interviewed at the school when I visited. I know I did a great job in the interview and the interviewer was really impressed! I have been told that getting an interview here plays a huge part in one's acceptance or denial. So, if you interview well, DO IT! So, I would say that applying early on in the process, getting an interview, writing a good essay, and being well-rounded are the main things the school is looking for.

If you want to go to U of R,Apr 09 2008Other
If you want to go to U of R, you should definitely set up an interview with an alum in your area. I did this and it helped me get in despite my relatively low test scores. Make sure you express your interest in attending a research university that can offer you the best education for your money.

Be creative with your applications essay. Write it yourself and write it about something you are really interested in. My essay was a fictional story of myself in the future working frantically in a lab to combat an ebola pandemic by developing a cure or vaccine or something. It was exciting and different. Its very overused to talk about your past experiences, so use the applications essay as an opportunity to demonstrate your creativity instead.

Don't worry too much about your test scores or high school grades. They do need to be decent, but I am proof that they do not need to be excellent. Also it helps if you took challenging courses in high school rather than just taking the minimum and getting good grades. They would rather see you get a C in an AP class than get an A in a regular class. Keep that in mind.

Hope this helps.

I thought my essay was the strongest part of my application. Discussed my passion for art, reading, and appreciating the little details about life. Athletics help with admission, and these days I'd say an interview is a must.

Getting admitted isn't that hard, just be a good, well-rounded student. If you're looking for scholarships, though, go for a high SAT/ACT score and make sure you have extracurriculars to write essays about.
