I got 3.3 560 math 500 reading 500 writing. Philanthropy in Africa. Essays were stellar. Held a job at the UPS store for 2 years and highlighted that. Parents are teacher and lawyer both with graduate degrees, they do take into account this because it shows that you are not an at risk person for not graduating if your parents graduated. Went to a high school that has a good reputation with UMD. You're competing with the students at your high school to get into a particular college, so it really depends on how they stack up compared to you. Apply early deadline. Honestly, if you're from Maryland do a favor and do not come here, it is the same thing as high school from our towns. Be different, If you're from the suburbs of DC, look at Towson, its at least a different city/culture than college park being that it is a suburb of baltimore.

They LOVE diversity and individualismMar 12 2012Biology
They LOVE diversity and individualism. I had the grades and SAT scores personally (which was a good thing considering I'm not a very cultured person) but I had friends who's grades from high school weren't amazing but they said they wrote their application essays on their own personal diversity or unique circumstances/background and got in. I think they're very subjective when they review apps. Numbers and all that matters, but personality plays a bigger part as compared to most other schools.

I had to write a couple essays and needed two teacher recommendations, take the SAT and show off whatever other extracurriculars I had. Be creative in your writing(they want to see something that stands out), have a decently high GPA and don't bomb your SAT, and you have a pretty good chance.

Take a tour before you decide on going here, even after doing that my first few weeks were crazy because I spent so much time looking for each building (and then the rooms inside each building).

If you want to go to Maryland, make sureJul 13 2010Anthropology
If you want to go to Maryland, make sure you follow the directions on the application. Do not go above and beyond and send a video of yourself or anything creative like that. Just write an essay that states why you want to go to Maryland, what you can contribute, what your experiences have prepared you for, things like that. Also, take a lot of AP and Honors courses, do well on your SAT (I had above a 2100), etc. I got into Maryland a month after I applied early decision. My grades in high school were 3.78+, I played tennis, I had a lot of honors, etc. So, if you do that and more, you can probably get in! Also, If you are an out of state student, you have a better chance of getting in because of your out of state money. It has NOTHING to do with who you are, so don't get excited. ;-)
