Getting in was pretty simple for me. I did well enough on my ACT and had decent grades. I got a 26,27,26,29 on my ACT tests, with a super score of 31. My weighted GPA was 3.5. I don't even think there was an essay. University Park has rolling admissions, which is very nice.

Do yourself a favor and stay away. It's not worth the money you will spend. I wrote a great essay to get in, but this turned out to be unnecessary.

About getting into University Park, it's pretty easy as long as you have a 3.5 GPA and above. The essay was a little important, and I don't think extra curricular work is even factored.

For Schreyer: Get AT LEAST a better-than-average GPA andMay 16 2010Video/Media
For Schreyer: Get AT LEAST a better-than-average GPA and SAT scores, very good recs, and (most importantly) write AWESOME essays that make you stand out.

For Penn State: Apparently it's becoming more competitive, but basically do your best in high school (I'd say at least a 3.5 GPA to be safe), do better-than-average on SATs, and be involved. If you don't get into Main, it's not a huge crisis. If you do two years at a branch campus, I think you only need a 2.5 GPA to transfer up to Main.
