For Film and Television you have to create a portfolio and write an essay, but the portfolio is what matters. They want creative people, not students who show off their technical skills, but those who can direct, write, and are inventive. If you want to get in, do what you love, not what you think they will love. My test scores weren't great (ACT), but my grades made up for it and my portfolio was strong, and that's what matters most. If you want to create genuine art, go to NYU. If you want to make shallow blockbusters, go to CSU.

I applied to NYU as a senior with a few good clubs, some leadership, 3.7 GPA, but HORRIBLE SATs. After being rejected, I took the ACT and did better than I did on the SAT, got almost a 4.0 during my first semester of college, joined several clubs with leadership roles, improved my resume by adding many more important awards/honors, got a job, and elaborated on my hundreds of hours of community service. And my essay was pretty good too. NYU wants you to be not just book smart, but also have a variety of interests outside of the classroom. Get excellent grades, but also have a lot of leadership roles and a job/volunteer work wouldn't hurt either.

Plan on having a 3.8 or better. And write a knock-em-dead-you-can't-live-without-me-essay. Then prove it. That's all I can say.
