Forget the discouragingly competitive acceptance rate (32% this year),Oct 16 2015Political Science
Forget the discouragingly competitive acceptance rate (32% this year), or the SAT stats. If you have what Northeastern are looking for, they will accept you. So just try and use that CommonApp essay to show them a lot about you. Also, get your High School teachers to write excellent recommendations about you, as these will be a good substitute for the lack of a supplementary essay.

I got a 2190 on my SATs (800 CriticalApr 09 2013Journalism
I got a 2190 on my SATs (800 Critical Reading, 800 Writing, 590 Math). I got an 800 on my English Literature SAT II.

My school grades were "meh" (A's and B's, two C's from math/science classes).

I'm a journalism major, so I think my SATs and SAT II's helped a great deal. They saw that I could write, and they focused on that. My essay was great, and I got some good recommendations. Other than that, I just hoped for the best. I wound up getting a $10,000 per year Excellence Scholarship.

Northeastern really likes students who think "outside the box." They're big on "innovation." They want the leaders, movers, and shakers of tomorrow. For the most part, though, they want to see that you're a go-getter. They want to see that you're someone who takes initiative. They want to see that you're passionate; that you care about something. If you have a particularly strong interest, regardless of what field it's in, let that shine in your application. Show that you're dedicated to it, and that you're taking steps to learn as much as you can on your own and make new discoveries.

Since my SAT scores weren't amazing and my gradesDec 13 2010Psychology
Since my SAT scores weren't amazing and my grades in high school were good, but not good enough to make me stand out, I think that the thing that got me into Northeastern was my essay. I wrote a very detailed essay about a character in a book and why I can relate to that character. I put alot of effort into my essay and I had several of my teachers and my parents proof read it and make corrections on it before I actually handed it in.

- Above schools median SAT / ACT scores, IApr 25 2010Art & Design Department
- Above schools median SAT / ACT scores, I also submitted both sets of scores
- Robust resume - lots of extracurriculars (Golf Team, Art Club, French Club, Stage Crew for theater productions), I made sure to show consistency and room for growth
- Personality: I made sure to write an essay where I could write about anything I wanted, and made sure it was the best damn piece of writing I'd ever done. Mine happened to be about what pissed me off about High School (Physics, the commute, the damnable social hierarchy).
- Summers: Don't waste away your summer by the pool, get a job, be a camp counselor, do a pre-college program if you have the ca$h
- I pursued a lot of things outside of school, I wrote a thesis and did volunteer work, show that things that you do in your free time make you a good and competitive candidate, and how it will make you an asset to the school.
