The main thing is make sure you keep your grades up and have at least a couple extracurriculars, maybe even an honors society. The optional essay truly is optional (I didn't do it and still got in), though if your GPA/SAT/ACT is at or lower than the average, or if you don't have any EC's, then I'd highly suggest you do it.

I applied the night beforeApr 18 2013English
I applied the night before. I copy and pasted the same essay I used for all of my other schools. It's a fall-back school for a lot of people, since it has a high acceptance rate. Any school as large as this is going to have a high acceptance rate, though. Don't let that make you think it's not as credible. I thought that long ago, when I was looking at Yale and Harvard, but I've realized that there is rigor here; it's just not against every damn person you meet. Which is refreshing. And desirable. Love. Come here.

Keep your HS GPA upJun 08 2011Computer Science
Keep your HS GPA up. GPA requirements keep rising...and many are surprised to get rejected from a school that they thought was their safety. Most schools say that they are up and coming, but Mason keeps being recognized as one of the top up and coming schools in the nation. Reasonable tuition, new sources listing it as a best value, and accolades on its programs are only going to make it more competitive.

SATs - prep, take them, and take them again. I had a 3.4 GPA and I think the SATs and my essay made the difference.

Essay - spend time on it. Seriously. Otherwise, you are just a bland GPA and an SAT and a set of extracurriculars.

Video - Mason allows you to post an admission video. I'm not sure it makes a difference, but it at least shows motivation...and puts a human face on your app.

Visit campus on a tour or for some other event sponsored by admissions - all things being equal, applying after you have visited helps give your app a boost.

Make sure you send all application materials, you do not need to do the video application, and make sure you have solid essays and recommendation letters.

I had very good recommendation letters, a good essay and decent SAT Scores. It also might help that I was from a regionally isolated area and Mason needed me to keep regional diversity.
