UW-Madison is no longer what is once was.Business - Management and Administration
UW-Madison is no longer what is once was. Budget cuts create the illusion that UW-Madison is elite because it's a tough place to get into. The reality is they can't handle the number of students here anymore. Enrollment is down. School is badly in need of infrastructure improvements it can't afford and it's largely living on it's storied past. Claims of diversity should be closely investigated by walking around town, it is still mostly attended by Wisconsin kids with virtually no past exposure to people of other color-cultures. I'm afraid that while UW-Madison now enjoys a solid athletic reputation, it's academic reputation is quietly but most surely, slipping. Don't necessarily confuse admission selectivity with quality of education here.

Try to get some advising at UW, thoughPsychology
Try to get some advising at UW, though I can't imagine how this is done. It was nonexistent when I was there and still is, according to members of my family who recently attended.

You must make a very very concerted effort to get to know at least one professor well so that you can get recommendations and any kind of mentoring. Grad student TAs are not a good substitute.

The Psychology department was overcrowded when I attended, and for the most part, wanted to weed out a good number of students. It was geared towards research, not teaching.

If you want to concentrate on behavioral or experimental psychology, the department is OK. If you want to go into counselling, take a look at the Social Work department.

In general, I would recommend looking at smaller schools in attractive locales as an alternative to UW Madison. Though I love Madison dearly, the school is just too big to get a great education, even if you study really hard and get good grades -- it's still well nigh impossible to get any personal attention from anyone there.

Question
Ugh! UW is not my idea of a good school. Not so brightSociology
Ugh! UW is not my idea of a good school. I've had so many problems with advisors, professors, UW administration, you name it, during my course of studies here. It has been a total nightmare. I switched majors but ended having to retake a TON of classes to try to get back on track on account of a poor advisor. In additon, I was raped in the dorms but the guy who did it was friends with my House Fellow, so my fellow made up some alibi to protect the guy and i was never able to prove that he did it. And then my junior year my car got trashed while parked in a university lot and the university refused to help me out with that. this school has been one huge headache...it is unbelievable. i would really not recommend coming here, it is totally awful.
