The University of Wisconsin - Madison

Students at Wisconsin really need to fight to get the proper advising. This is a right that you have, and you need to pursue it.

In general, I believe that you can overcome the cookie-cutter anonymous atmosphere of learning at Wisconsin, but you really have to try.

It will take some work, but find a professor in your field who is interested in you and cultivate that. Don't accept all the brushoffs that are so common at Wisconsin. And, if all else fails, transfer to Ohio State, which in general treats their undergrads a lot better than Wisconsin.

UW Madison is a very large research university. The faculty are for the most part quite focused on what they are doing in terms of research -- often to the point that education is second to research. With that being said however it must be said that if the student is serious and willing to take part in research and be interested in learning the opportunities are limitless. While class sizes can often be quite large, especially entry level prereq courses, the experience a student can receive can be compared to the ivies -- that is, of course, YOU are willing to learn.
