-There is a culture of reverse-snobbery on campus. If you're "privileged" (especially if you're from a bigger city)and didn't have to take out loans and/or work your way through college, you're gonna be hassled/mocked for it (usually behind your back and sometimes to your face)...
-East coasters and Midwesterners rarely interact outside the classroom; if they do there is hostility in varying degrees... Incidentally, a good number of East coasters are Ivy League rejects who ended up at their safety and are rather bitter about it, so they take it out on their small town classmates.
-If you have a choice between a lecturer and a tenured professor when making your schedule, bear in mind that the lecturer is usually (but not always) more approachable and willing to answer questions outside of class while the prof is usually (but not always) more focused on conducting research. There are times when it's basically "teach yourself".
-Getting a good TA (who can totally compensate for having an unapproachable/unhelpful professor/lecturer) basically comes down to luck.
-You may find Madison rather small if you're from a major metro area.
The Good
-UW-Madison is well-respected when you apply to grad/professional school.
-Badger sports are a great form of entertainment.
-Some of the women are gorgeous. (apologies if that's too sexist)
-Most of the faculty are completely overqualified (always a good thing) to be doing what they're doing...
-The typical student at this school had only about a 27 or so on the ACT, so it's not very difficult to finish in the top 10% for an A (no grade inflation at UW)... I half-assed my way through college and still got As for the most part...
In SummaryI was a pseudo-slacker in HS and undergrad who "tried" but didn't really TRY. If I was gonna do it all over again, I would've worked harder in secondary school and attempted applications to Ivies/top 10 universities... It's not that I wasn't happy with Wisconsin (I liked it), but I've always been left wondering what I may have missed out on if that makes any sense... But, I must admit that for the amount of money spent as an in-state resident I got a good education.
