Positive Negative Neutral Advice
Disregard the negative comments.Quite BrightOther
Disregard the negative comments. I have never learned more or had more fun as I have had these past 2 year at VCU. True, the enviornment isn't for everyone. You have to be smart about where you are, but it is the real world, and not a bubble, so this is an important thing to learn. As for the social life I personally am never at a lack for things to do. Great bands come through Richmond's many venues about every weekend, and there are several dance clubs. Richmond is a place that is full of a counter-culture that some people are not open to, due the the excellent art school. I can't believe that someone would be so rude so call them "weirdos" or whatever and then complain that none of the students were friendly. You have to have an open mind. People here are into art, music, theatre, film much more than your usual university. If you want to be spoon fed and coddled by your mommy for the rest of your life, don't come here. Go to JMU or UVA or Tech and join a frat and pay for your friends. And you know what, I know plently of people who sport Lacostia and are perfectly happy here. As for academics, I think the best departments are the Art School, Med School, and Engineering. I am an Interdiplinary major and I love it. VCU gave me the freedom to create my own curriculum. Basicly, come here if you want to be an adult and see the real world, with all it's ups and downs. I'm not going to lie, I've been mugged, but my expeirences have taught me a lot and has made me mature exponetially.

Question
Not a top flightMath
Not a top flight math program by any strech. Very good for boosting your GPA. If you need to go to a state school, this is a good choice since you don't have a lot of core requirements so you have time to pick up other majors/degrees.

Question
VCU is a good school if you likeQuite BrightMechanical Engineering
VCU is a good school if you like urban campuses. Some people complain about the campus, but that's why you go on campus tours prior to enrollment to see how it fits you. IB/AP/honors background in high school, excellent extracurriculars, community service, and employment, and I find VCU exciting. People that complain about the people here are socially challenged themselves because there is a lot of diversity and tolerance of peoples' backgrounds at this college. I wanted to stay in-state and I had the credentials to get into any school I wanted in VA- Tech,UVA,VCU,ODU (mechanical engineering programs) but I chose VCU because it is dynamic, diverse, and urban. Any college is what you make of it. You can go to a really prestigious university and be miserable or go to a university that you love and has few drawbacks. Also, VCU's engineering program is well-received and is gaining ground rapidly for a relatively new engineering school. VCU is for engineers who like urban environments--like me,Tech and UVA- campuses bored me, but that's just me, someone else might love quiet, rural campuses. BTW, VCU's engineering school does not have lax admissions- applicant pool is starting to resemble that of Tech in some programs.
