Positive Negative Neutral Advice
Okay, I don't like to be the barrierQuite BrightJournalism
Okay, I don't like to be the barrier of bad news but VCU is horrible. I am not a negative person and I do not like to be negative. What I am about to say is the honest truth and this is only for the good of those who are considering this school I must say when I first attended VCU I thought it was a great school the people friendly, the facilities were clean, my advisor was awesome, and they had a bunch of activites. So I did what I could in between work and school I hit up a couple activities to get used to school and try to meet new faces. I really gave vcu a try.

There are some advantages to the school. The campus is nice to be in an urban setting. They do try to keep you busy as far as getting involved in clubs, organizations, and sports etc. There fitness center at the Siegal center is nice, not all colleges have nice gyms attached with a cafe so that's cool. The professors are alright, they dont hold your hand which is good because its time to get into the real world. they try to make you walk on your own two feet can't complain about that, I actually needed that. VCU is also changing something, for example adding more restaurants, more facilities, etc whatever is needed for the students :)Now for the disadvantages...Okay I will stay professional lol..Okay so within about 2 to 3 weeks thats when I began to see the real VCU after all the happy orientation was over that when I began to notice a made a mistake. After numerous times and trying to put all that I can in my college experience it was worthless trying at VCU. First, I must say the school is very "clicky" everyone kind of belongs to click here. There is no independency. VCU is like a fake color to me, why do I say that? Well, everyone and I mean almost everyone that attends this school is from Virginia, so alot of the students come straight out of high school with their "clicks" and go right to VCU believe me it's true. Also VCU accepts anyone and everyone! No lie. So there is nothing challenging about this school at all. I love challenges and I need to be in a school that will test my knowlegde but VCU is nothing more than a large community college, and not trying to be mean but its the truth. Now for the programs if your not going to VCU for medical or art than don't got to VCU at all. There mass communications programs is horrible they didnt do study abroad last year and was dying for that! They only care about the med students and art of cours. And please dont let anyone lie to you about richmond, THERE IS NOTHING TO DO IN RICHMOND! THERE ARE NO OPPORTUNITES IN RICHMOND! please do not come here looking for advancement you will get no where. Its boring down here, they do the same things all the time! Lets see the same horrible looking clubs, which aren't that many, ummm what else oh the malls but the best one is the 30 to min away and thats it. If you come here you will only fine the little bit excitment at VCU and then you will become like the rest of the students and form a "click". There is alot of homeless people all around campus robbing students and last year a student was shot. Its not a safe school at it ghetto and im not exaggerating. Well I can keep going on and on! WHATEVER YOU DO DONT COME HERE. I am leaving that you lord on my way to a better school and that school is NEW YORK UNIVERSITY where the truth is!!

Question
I'm amazed by many of the comments here.Quite BrightEnglish
I'm amazed by many of the comments here. As a law student at the University of Pittsburgh,my VCU education has served me well. If you are a sheltered antisocial baby then, yes, it is probably going to be difficult to make friends and find things to do in Richmond. Really people? THere is less to do in Richmond than in other VA schools? Williamsburg,Charlottesville,Blacksburg, Harrisonburg, all completely sustained by universities, hence virtually NO outside life besides the college. While Richmond isn't DC, there is certainly enough to do. There's a great art, film and music scene while the city remains small enough not to be overwhelming. Again, if you know how to make friends there's almost no way not to have a good time in Richmond. Go to a house party in the fan, hang out by the James, check out the art galleries downtown, catch a show in Shockoe...basically live your life in this real, breathing, unique, lovable dwarf of a city. And if you need someone to hold your hand cuz the stweets are just so scawy and those awful men keep asking for change, then you won't make it in any city and should just live at home with your uncle or something. Bottom line most schools in Virginia might teach you how to do your job,the unique experiences offered at VCU and in Richmond teach you how to think like an individual.

Question
I am currently a student at VCU andBrightPsychology
I am currently a student at VCU and i LIKE it. Socially, this is a great school. It is very clique-y though, but with that said i'm sure you'll find somewhere to fit in, and will find life long loyal friends. However, academically certain programs are good, some aren't. I highly suggest that if you are NOT an art student or pre-med student, you look at other universities that are better fit for what you want. (And) Even our art school has an art foundation program, and at the end of that, you don't choose which program you want to get into, they put you where they think is best for you (??? idk what that is about). VCU has a habit of not letting you decide what is best for your academic future, they suggest what is best for you, but then it always seems like what they suggest is unavailable at the time. The faculty isn't very helpful, and if you like to take tests this is definitely the school for you. 95% of my classes have been study/test! There is no additional work, i have an issue with this as i don't feel like tests show your potential and abilities like projects or coursework does.

Residential life is pretty good though, once you are no longer a freshman. I didnt like the dorms so much when i was a freshman, but the upper classmen apartment style living is SOOOO much better and i actually like it.

And if you are not from Richmond, the city pretty much sucks. There is A LOT to do. Is it near VCU, no. You have to either drive to get there or hop on the bus. I've gotten on the bus for trips before and it's usually a 45 minute ordeal because malls/shopping/restaurants/nightlife are not that close to the main campus. However if you are ever able to get to Shockoe bottom and Carytown you will have a good time!

Like any school VCU is what you make it. They babysit you freshman year, then after that you are on your own. You are in an urban setting. Richmond is the worst city, you will get hassled by homeless people, possibly mugged, cars get broken into, men yell obscene things at you, BUT you don't get the 24 hour city life, with good theatres/shopping/restaurants/culture/lifestyle like you would get in a bigger city. So if you want a city life, i suggest you move to a real city like NYC, Chicago, LA, San Diego, Dallas, Seattle, DC, etc!But to each his own, VCU has a lot of potential, but it can also set you back no matter what you do. Do your research first, and make sure you visit first, visit and stay a couple of days!
