The professors at UH are brilliant, but theMechanical Engineering
The professors at UH are brilliant, but the University of Houston lacks some of the basic tools needed to succeed as a mechanical engineer. When I got my first job, I noticed that a lot of other engineers that went to Texas A&M, or even prairie view for that matter, had a lot of experience with programs such as ANSYS and actually learned how to use a mill and lathe in their undergraduate studies. The only thing I learned at UH was Matlab, and I never saw it again. Their respective universities also really helped in helping them pursue co-op opportunities and internships, something which UH seems to have a "could care less" attitude unless your GPA is close to a 4.0 or something. Mine was a 2.74, not bad, but not great either, so no experience. I talk to guys that graduated from PVAMU with a 2.5 that got internships. What great experienced they gained!!! I felt very lost at my first job compared to other graduates from other universities, even Lamar University. I would STRONGLY suggest looking at other universities. Remember, an ME degree from UH does not compare with one from UT or TAMU systems. I found that out the hard way.

I am adding to my comment below.AveragePhysics
I am adding to my comment below. How students feel about this university depends alot on the department you are in. Friendly students, good teachers and facilities vary among departments. The university is building a new library, science and engineering building. The feeling I get from most people is: They are here not by choice, but by circumstance. Ex: English teacher put us into groups to discuss homework for 15 minutes. Immediately, students were ragging on UH for 15 minutes, saying they are here not by choice. The teacher did nothing. Realize, I could say alot more, but I only write what I have seen myself, not heresay.

Question
Recently, parking has improved with new lots.AveragePhysics
Recently, parking has improved with new lots. But during busy hours, people are playing musical chairs. The Cougar Place apartments is the worst I have ever seen including any motel. The campus is in a bad neighborhood. This is a commuter school. The social life and camaraderie is low. I am a physics major. Fellow students do not study together much. They can be rude and judgemental. I went to UT Austin and Houston Baptist University and didn't have these problems. Two of my professors plus graduate students have commented: UH undergraduates are stupid. Twice, in a coffee shop, I was told UH is for stupid ones. Four of my professors have complained about classroom facilities. In a junior level math course, students could not see the board half the time. The class was too small for number of students. Teaher was oblivious and used side board. We stood up for a few days. And this was a math major only class. In another classroom, chalkboard is small and unusual location. Prof moved us to new room because of this. I have never seen a white board anywhere. No ventilation, AC, or heating in two classrooms. In three weeks, my prof got heater running. Library computer accessibility is very bad. You could wait an hour and still not find one open. Another professor commented UH is notorious for lack of preplanning for maintenance costs of building design. But, library and science building are under construction, maybe 3 to 10 years. I believe that some find UH just what they needed. I believe that some are here for financial reasons and feel great and content being here. But, if you come from out of town, be prepared to transfer again.
