Positive Negative Neutral Advice
I'm a transfer student who recently started theBrightSociology
I'm a transfer student who recently started the spring semester at UH.
I'm originally from California so I might be bias, but the standards to get accepted here are low....very low. The semester has just started (spring 11') but already I can tell that the quality of the education I am getting isn't much better than the quality of the community college in California that I came from. The teachers are all very nice, informative and you can tell they know there stuff, but the reputation of UH being an easy school is absolutely spot on. Also, many of the students here don't really seem to take their education seriously at all. I've met some very smart people, but the vast majority of the students here are just ignorant (or dumb), which is surprising given the diversity around campus. Maybe the reputation of UH being an easy school lures the ignorant people here like a light to a bug. I don't know...

I came here because I had read how well the Texas, and Houston's economy was strong and healthy. That it was a great place for college graduates and jobs after graduation were plentiful. Everybody knows about California's fiscal woes, but why was I unable to read anything about the huge crisis looming in Texas? This is disheartening information for me as an out-of-state student who moved here specifically for the prospect of getting a good job after I graduate in a stable economy. It's amazing that Texas, a state that prides itself on the reputation of being fiscally conservative have allowed themselves to be 25 BILLION dollars in debt.

Although my tuition is about the same as if I was to go to any UC, the quality of the education, like I mentioned above is not up to par with how much I'm paying, especially after hearing the announcement that UH is now a Carnegie Foundation Tier One institute, only one of three public institutions in Texas.

Although it's a good school, I'm regretting the gamble I made to move to Houston, as it seems things aren't much better here than they are back home. Except that is, the cost of living, which is cheap, but that also doesn't include the cost of utilities, which in Houston, will be used a alot. It's technically winter time, (End of January) and it's already humid.

The campus is nice, there is always activity going on, and the new facilities on the campus are very nice, specifically the Library, and Moody Towers dining hall. However, when it rains the campus seems to flood, since Houston is very flat.

Question
UH is a pretty decent school.Quite Bright
UH is a pretty decent school.
Academics are pretty decent. I have had some quite challenging professors where they graded pretty hard but there is a TON of help available. I met with my English professor quite a few times and she told me what I needed on my major papers. I struggle pretty severely with math and the CASA center is quite excellent with their tutors, they know what they are doing for sure even though they don't speak english too well. Overall I felt that I did learn a lot this semester meanwhile I got all A's.

Parking was not an issue for me at all because I paid for the welcome center garage which guarantees me a spot.

The only problem I have with the UNI is the quality of the student body. It is very very diverse which is an awesome thing, but a lot of people are very unmotivated to succeed. Drug use is extremely rampant in the dorms. I've seen my friend go from very happy to start and do well in college, to failing most of her classes because she was getting fucked up every other night in the dorms. I honestly don't mind weed at all because I smoke it as well, but there's a ton of cocaine, pills, and even crack use on campus which is really really bad.

Because of that, I really want to get out and go to a more highly regarded school where students take academics as a high priority.

Question
Overall U of H is nowhere near asQuite BrightFinance
Overall U of H is nowhere near as bad as some of these reviews make it out to be. Its way , i repeat way better than i expected. The financial aid office is a little slow but in the end everything gets fixed on time. The Cafeteria is pretty good(just remodeled over the summer) . Depending of what type of college experience you're looking U of H may or may not be fore you. Not enough people live on campus though, so in the caf you do generally see the same people most of the time. So if you're looking to literally see a new person everyday outside of class(cafeteria) go to a school like UT. WHere way more people stay on campus. but if u of h is your only option you'll like it>!
