Positive Negative Neutral Advice
I just graduated from UH and I couldn'tJournalism
I just graduated from UH and I couldn't ask for a better college experience.
People who haven't attended UH often have preconceived notions about the university -- boring, just a commuter school, high crime, etc. I'm here to tell you all that is false. This is one of the best universities in America. UH is changing drastically everyday. I've been here for 5 years and I can tell you that it's not the same school it was when I started. It has many more students, new buildings, better athletics, school spirit and national recognition.

Campus Life -- college is what ever you make of it. UH is no different. Yes, there is a significant portion that commutes but there is also a large part of the student body that lives on campus. Plenty of students leave near the University, too. I don't see why that would be a bad idea? There are plenty of nice and affordable areas close to campus. Gas prices are ridiculous and this is the 4th largest city, so there is going to be endless traffic. There are plenty of clubs and organizations to get involved in -- SGA, the school paper, frats, sororities, athletic clubs, etc. I worked at the campus radio station and I've mad tons of friends throughout the semester there. There are always activities taking place on campus, even on the weekends and/or holidays. How many schools can you name that have a bar on campus? How many have bowling allies that stay open quite late? The point is: you can't complain that there is nothing to do on campus. There is plenty to do. You just have to make the effort. They are currently building more dorms and apartments for the student body.

Student Body: UH is an example of what a modern society is supposed to look like. This is the only place in the south where EVERYBODY gets along. As a minority, I feel like I'm part of something special. I've never heard of or seen discrimination take place on campus. Everyone gets along great. You see plenty of interracial couples walking across campus. You seen plenty of diverse groups in the UC and the library. Schools like Texas A&M or other SEC schools are 20 years backwards. Schools like that create bad images of southerners. This is the direction the United States is going in -- diversity and a different view point. We have a biracial president last time I checked, right? UH is for everyone. You'll see 18 year olds, you'll see army vets, 40 year olds and foreign exchange students. It's awesome. It's like a little city in it's self. There are also plenty of good looking women to choose from.

Athletics: Football season is amazing. All the home games were sold out, tons of school spirit and a sea of red and white on game days. The school is moving to the Big East, which means more publicity for the basketball program. The recruiting class for next year is ridiculous. The basketball arena will be PACKED in a couple of seasons.

Campus: It is a very modern campus. New technology and architecture. The campus is growing day by day. However, if you look around the Roy Cullen building, there is still an historical element to the campus. The UH administration is working diligently to improve the overall quality of the university. We are just getting started. The school is becoming closer to becoming Tier 1. We have 4 nobel peace prize winners on campus. Our president is putting us on the map. Plenty of research and programs are being added to the school. UH alumni are everywhere! That's the difference between us and other schools. We have amazing people calling the shots. If I haven't convinced you to apply here, then I'm sorry. Keep this school on your radar. UH is changing. People who applied to all these other schools are going to regret not coming here and being part of the experience.

Question
So I've been attending UH for two yearsQuite BrightPhilosophy
So I've been attending UH for two years now and I can honestly give some real feedback to the experience you will have. The only shining light at this university is the honors college. Students who are in honors usually take academics pretty seriously, are pretty liberal, and most importantly open minded.

Other than the honors college, the university needs to improve the quality of the student body immensely. There are some real hood rats at this school, in addition to other forms of "diversity". You can call this school the second most diverse in the nation but when 90% of the asians segregate themselves with other asians, I don't see how the general student body can benefit from it. It's like that with almost every race on campus with the sole exception being the students from the honors college who are generally very sociable with other races.

This whole segregation stems from the inherent suburbanism that thrives on this campus. The majority of the student population commutes from the suburbs and still holds that mentality when it comes to the close minded bubble they call home. This suburbanism also extends into life for those who actually live on campus. I have never seen so many wanksters in my life who listen to nothing but rap music and are from the woodlands or katy. Please, yall aint hood. I'm no inner city snob but the amount of ignorance and lack of open-mindness at this institution is astounding.

The school itself is pretty decent academically but a lot of the professors are way too hard on students. UH has some of the highest gpa deflation in the country and if you're serious about going to a good law/med school then avoid this place at all costs because your GPA will SUFFER.

Also the campus lacks zero identity when it comes to aesthetics and architecture. Sure the new buildings are hella nice but they all look so out of place. There's a severe lack of consistency when it comes to architecture and

UH can not hold a candle to Rice or UT's campus who actually take pride in keeping their university uniform and beautiful. So all in all UH is definitely a good place if you're close minded, enjoy commuting in 100 degree weather, and are enthralled by newness rather than character.

Question
I have to admit I'm at this schoolSuper BrilliantFinance
I have to admit I'm at this school reluctantly because I couldn't afford to go to a better school so I came in with zero school spirit.

Attending classes and seeing the student body and faculty did not help my mind set at all. The faculty is complacent and doesn't care to enrich the student to further develop an actual understanding of the coursework. There are, however, few exceptions to this, but the majority of the faculty is very disconnected to what teaching should be.

The caliber of student is, again in general, complacent. I believe it stems from the efforts of the professor, but still not a good excuse. Students would rather take an "easy A" course that will not enrich them in the long-run and STILL cheat at an "easy A" course. There is entirely too much cheating at this school. I understand that there is cheating everywhere, but it hurts more when the professor KNOWS that cheating is taking place and does nothing to correct it but to make exams harder (Doesn't matter for the cheaters, punishes those who actually study).

Whoever is in charge of the school budget should be fired. Wasteful spending on non-essential "upgrades" to the school. New railings for a handicapped ramp that originates from a closed off parking lots, dozens of large flat screen televisions that stay on 24/7, buildings that require RE-BUILDING before they are even open....and one of the WORST things is SECURITY and PARKING!!! Security is non-existent. The guard at the front desk video chats with people at the computer, minimizing the camera view. Parking tickets are everywhere because its extra cash for this money-grabbing "university" yet safety is always an issue. I remember getting a parking ticket on a Sunday at 8:30pm... yet I have never seen a security guard past 5pm.Going here will be a huge disservice to your professional career. I have miraculously landed a great job with a very big firm that isn't supposed to hire from UH (I don't blame them), so it IS still possible to get a job... but most people will have to settle for less, IE: Target Floor Supervisor, Enterprise Sales Rep, Non-paid "Financial Advising" internship, and then no job. All of the aforementioned reasons are why UH isn't a target school and why I'm ashamed to tell people I went here. Looking for a job at Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan (NOT CHASE), any top consulting firm, and a plethora more.
