Texas A & M University - College Station

I can't speak for other majors, but the Biomedical Sciences Department (the only major in the College of Veterinary Medicine) really is a great major for PreMed/PreDental students or those pursuing a career in the health/research areas. The coursework required in the first 2 years is mundane (biology, chemistry, etc...): you have to get all of your prerquisites out of the way before you get to take any really good classes like Anatomy (where you really get to do hands on dissection of real dogs in a real Veterinary/Medical environment) or Physiology, which has been my favorite class at A&M. This major, and this school WILL prepare you for professional school provided that you put the effort in. All too many students gripe about bad degrees/majors, but you have to take full advantage of your courses and put some effort in. I currently have a 4.0 GPA, but not because I'm a genius, but because I work hard at what I do and always study hard. Another thing about this school: students from large cities will inevitably find it "hick-like" or a "redneck" paradise, but students from small towns like myself see it in a much different light. Students in Ag majors will definitely have more "country" people in their classes, whereas in the Biomedical Sciences department, we have a preprofessional atmosphere (for the most part). I'm glad I came to Texas A&M; it has worked out well for me. Be sure actually visit any school before you decide to attend and NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER EVER, just go by heresay: people who are jaded seem to give many schools like A&M a bad rep. I don't care where you go, but be sure to see if you fit in at the school you really decide to attend.

Attending A&M was what finally brought me out of my extreme shyness, and those four years were some of the best of my life! I had so many fun things to do, with so many nice people, that making friends was a given! It's SO wonderful to be a part of such a fabulous university! I don't understand how anyone can be an Aggie, but not participate in everything that brings out the Aggie spirit (i.e. Yell Practice, Muster, etc.). It's a blast!

I also really learned to study effectively at A&M. I graduated with honors, and went on to graduate with my second Bachelor's degree in nursing, with a 4.0 GPA.If you want to be a part of a really big, really fun, really educated family, then go to A&M! You won't regret it if you get involved!!!

Alumnus Male -- Class 2000

I moved to Texas after I graduated high school right outside of DC. I knew no one going to the school and had no one to hang out with when I visited my parents. That all changed within the first few weeks. I lived in the dorms and it was fantastic for a first year student. The people on this site that have continually bashed A&M for being redneck and close minded must have only seen the surface. I will agree it appears to have that take to it, but that's why A&M has so many student organizations. By the time I finished with my degree I had friends from around the world with differing political views. The idea that you can only get along here if you are a white Christian conservative is absurd. I'm assuming the people who have said this did not attempt to find people open to talk.As for the education I found it top notch. I graduated with a degree in Radiological Health Engineering and immediately found a job through help from my advisors, professors, and on campus work. The classwork was challenging and the professors expected hard work. I often was lazy with homework and going to class and it hurt my GPA severely over the course of two semesters. This is an absolutely amazing school and I am so glad to have chosen it. That being said it is not for everyone, and be sure to come to the school for an education (i.e. research your major). Most people who don't like A&M or fail out because their classes are not interesting or dynamic.
