Positive Negative Neutral Advice
If you get thrown in theQuite BrightUndecided
If you get thrown in the
"Great Books" curriculum called GSP
as an undecided major walk don't run
away from NYU unless you love writing
papers and reading boring material ad
infinitum. Heavy workload. The Third Ave. North
apt. resident hall for freshmen is
extremely poorly maintained and no
one cares when you have a problem
like a major water leak wrecking all
your clothes, etc. The study lounges
are dirty and bare. The layout of
apts. make it harder to make friends
on your floor here. Everything you
read about NYU being a heavy drug use
school is totally correct. Some profs
were anti Christian. If you are a
religious conservative you will not make
it here unless you are on a wellness floor,
maybe not even then. NYU is vastly overrated and overpriced. Elite large research institutions cater to

grad students and research so frosh get
left in the lurch, except for helping to
finance everybody else. No sports team,
no team spirit, no quad. Student health
center gives very mediocre care.
You would be much better off if you want
the arts to live at home or off campus
with a friend you bring to school and
going to a state college in an honor's
program. Only positive thing I can say
is of course NYC is wonderful for Broadway
fans and NYU has a lot of extra curricular
groups. The Protestant ministry office
isn't powerful enough to be a source of guidance/
unifying influence like the Jewish center, catholic center, or gay community.

Question
NYU is truly aQuite BrightEducation
NYU is truly a school that takes advantage of New York City, for better or worse. I found myself missing the traditional "closed campus" of other schools, but I enjoyed not being segregated at the same time.

22, psychology / creative writing, senior. i feel like i have been provided with the chance to work with notable experts in both my programs' fields. being intertwined with nyc is an advantage as far as things to do, but not having a real campus is a problem for some. there is a lot of mistrust of the university by the study body, esp relating to tuition and teachers' unions. keep in mind the reputation is a bit over-hyped by some. students tend to be the cynical type, but there is also a lot of diversity.
