I graduated from NYU last year in 3.Quite BrightPreMed and Medical
I graduated from NYU last year in 3.5 years and it was a huge waste I regret ever going there. It's so overpriced it's retarded i could have went to a state school for free but I was scammed by them into thinking there was something there, and it was a huge waste of time and money. I also hated 90% of the people there. I'm now in med school and can tell you NYU had absolutely nothing to do with that. I studied and learned on my own because lectures were terrible and useless, studied for the MCAT and figured out what I had to do to get into med school on my own, and most of the kids that were with me in pre-med didn't get in anywhere. And now that I'm in med school i really regret ever going there because UNDERGRAD DOESN'T MATTER JUST GET GOOD GRADES WHEREVER YOU GO TRUST ME I MADE THE MISTAKE AND NOW I'M PAYING FOR IT.

Question
Okay, so I'm not quite as bitter asNot so brightBiology
Okay, so I'm not quite as bitter as the other people who have posted here, but I still transferred out of NYU nonetheless. I didn't hate my time at NYU persay, but it would be a long-shot to say that I enjoyed it or had fun.

I really do think NYU is a perfect, wonderful place for some people but as almost everyone on this website has said, its is truly truly not for everyone. Before you come to NYU have a serious introspective look on what kind of person you are, what you want to get out of your education, and what kind of college experience you want to have.

People who absolutely love NYU fit into a few categories. They LOVE nyc and urban living, hate everything about the typical college experience (frats, quads, sports, nature, etc), are in Stern/Tisch, want to get ahead with internships and other opportunities presented in nyc, are extremely outgoing and can make friends in the often isolating & hostile social environment, are incredibly, incredibly independent, usually like fashion, and don't mind jumping into a social scene that is entirely motivated by money (clubs, bars, hookah, etc takes major cash people...kids on average probably spend over $130/weekend).

I personally, did not fit into any of those categories. I was never totally excited about the city nor was I completely set on NYU. It was never my dream school, but I don't regret going there. It helped me find out what kind of person I was, which was not obviously, a city-loving one. NYC and NYU requires a very certain type of person to thrive there (seen above), and unfortunately, that wasn't me. I think that the other comments are perhaps too negative. NYU is an amazing, fabulous, unparalleled haven for urban-loving students and I encourage all people who think that they fit into that category to apply and not be discouraged by the negative comments. You will do fine there IF you know you belong, and are determined to thrive.

Question
NYU is exactly what people describe it as:Quite BrightOther
NYU is exactly what people describe it as: a university within the city. If you are looking for the typical collegiate experience, do not come here. There is no campus and little to no school spirit at all.

Social:
People are generally pretty friendly and will make polite conversation, but it is difficult to stay in contact with them. NYU takes away the 4 "buffer years" that are associated with college where everyone parties with each other all of the time. Instead, NYU thrusts you immediately into being an adult who has to work extremely hard to get together a group of people for a simple Saturday night hangout. Once people at NYU form their cliques, its very hard to become a part of them, so choose your friends wisely.

Academics:
If you are coming here, I highly advise you to decide what you plan to study. If you are either undecided or planning to major in a traditional major, do not come here. The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) is a waste of time and money. There are a lot of required classes for any major in CAS that do not relate in any way to the majors. The MAP requirements tend to be stupid and very easy to b.s. It is easy to manipulate your way into getting a good grade in the class, so if you care about more than just the letter and want to actually learn, I would not advise coming here. That being said, if you are in Tisch, Stern, or Steinherdt, the city makes a great "second classroom". However for those in Gallatin, it is often difficult to take classes at the other colleges, though that is the foundation of individualized study. Most classes are only open to those that are in a specific major, and will not allow a student from Gallatin in.All in all, the city is great if you know what you want. There is a lot of competition at NYU, even in the friendship department. If you are looking for a typical college experience, again, DO NOT GO HERE! Also, it would be unwise for you to attend if you are planning to go to CAS or Gallatin, as they are just wastes of time and it is difficult to take classes that truly interest you. Think twice about coming here and read all of the reviews. Chances are, you can save your money and get a valuable education elsewhere.
