My goal in this comment isn't to discourageBrightSociology
My goal in this comment isn't to discourage people who are right for carolina from coming to this school. I just want to inform the students who may think they are perfect for this school and be sadly disappointed. The prestige of Carolina is unbelievable, especially in NC. So what you here about it may not entirely be the truth and I think it is fair to let prospective students know this school is not what it seems. You will be treated as a number, as if you do not matter, and in all honesty, you don't matter to the administration here. If you are pre-med do not go to this school, the competition is too fierce for you to get a quality education in any popular science like bio or chem. These departments are ridiculously impersonal so spare yourself the heartbreak and go to a school that will focus on your success as a student and get the attention you need. Trust me you want to be treated like you matter more importantly you deserve it after the money you spend. Don't fall for all those organizations we offer either. What they don't tell you is most of our intro courses weed you out by being huge and cramming 3 classes into one. So you won't have time to enjoy these gems if you are studying like they make you at this school. At least not for your first 2 years. But there is a silver lining the people here are great, socially I have never felt more at home. So if you know what field you want to pursue...do yourself a favor and don't go to this school unless you don't mind giving that dream up and meeting great people in return.

Question
I hated this school.Quite BrightPhilosophy
I hated this school. Being from NC, perhaps I was expecting something close to heaven from the way everyone talked about it, and maybe this was the problem. There is sooo much racism, I'm a white female and I'm even disturbed by it. Everyone thinks they're god's gift to humanity, which is far from the truth. The campus is pretty, and the philosophy dept is good, but I'm transferring. Plus, people are are not interesting at all. Its next to impossible to get good seats at sports games.

The dorms kind of suck, even though the campus is pretty. Also, the weather is usually nice.
I feel like this school is just a huge diploma factory, and the problem is they refuse to admit it. They give off this aura of a tight-knit community but when you get here you realize it's nothing like that.plus the parties kind of suck. everyone is always throwing up everywhere. ew.

Question
I learned quite a bit of mathematics atEconomics
I learned quite a bit of mathematics at UNC and felt that I was better prepared in my P. hD. program than even the MIT/Cal Tech grads.

I always felt that UNC was a fairly low pressure place. The lack of grade inflation-which no one seems to talk about here-in my mind helps things. To get an A you don't need to be smarter than everyone (although it helps) you just need to learn the material incredibly well. If you just get a handle on the material, you will get the average UNC 2.7 --which curiously seems to be viewed as acceptable. Many folks are just happy to be at UNC-again an attitude that I found puzzling. But as an out of state student I never felt that Chapel Hill was the center of the world like the in-staters did.

My niece goes to University of Michigan (I fund it), my twin brother went to Duke, and I taught at University of Virginia. The level of competition and intensity at these schools is far greater than UNC, especially at Michigan. The pressure cooker attitude just doesn't exist at UNC. Despite a lot of complaints I have read here about UNC, I think a student needs to ask himself or herself how much stress and intensity they need.

I always wonder if I would have pushed myself more if I went to a Duke or Princeton (my first choice, got in but Dad didn't want to pay). Based on what my twin brother did at Duke, I am not sure whether things would have been different. One last thing. Since I had a bad family life and was far from home, I wouldn't have made it through without the help of 4 or 5 friends and yes, caring faculty! Despite its size, I found people who cared about me and other young people. My niece has had some boyfriend/emotional issues at Michigan and she also found some help. The point is at these huge places you have to seek out relationships-thye just don't come to you.
